If you just want to fade the titles In and out, you can use the clip fade slider. If you want to apply a transition from the effects bin, put the titles in the secondary stirrings and drag the effect from the bin to the edit between them. I’ve found that you can put a bit of gap at the head or tail of the secondary storyline to add a transition to the first clip.

  • Yes indeed, I actually heard from Adobe.

Turning off the XMP will fix this, but I hope I can be convinced that injecting metadata into the original clip is a good idea.

A better idea is if there were a relink tool in FCX.

I had my original files on another drive. I replaced the PP modified files with the originals on my FCX drive, and bingo, the clips came back online.

Do we all need to save original copies of all of our media, just in case something changes?

I think so. I’m going to start backing up my working drive more religiously. I used to think that as long as I could recapture my footage from tape that I was safe….. no more.

    Thanks for the input.

  • Well, nothing I can do will bring back my missing media. Importing the clips back into FCX just gives me new clips in the event, but there is no correlation to the clips in the timeline.

Ironically, as if to mock me, if I try to delete the newly imported clips from the event, I get the warning:

No… I don’t think it’s in use. What makes you think it’s in use? Everything is off-line from that clip, even though when I select “reveal in finder” and then select “view original file” from the alias in the “original media” folder, the media is there and will play.

Is Apple going to start fixing these problems before we all bleed to death waiting?

I feel like the kids in Peter Pan, saying over and over again “I DO believe in Final Cut Pro X. I do! I do! I DO!”

but it doesn’t come back to life.

    Thanks for listening.

    Try this…

There does not seem to be an overlay that shows you the center, only the safe title, so I created a simple one in photoshop.

Single vertical line, and a single horizontal line.

Connect the cross over the clip you want to adjust the anchor point of.

Adjust the X and Y until the point you want is directly in the center.
Now put the X and Y values of the anchor points into the X and Y position.

Now when you rotate, it rotates around the point you selected.

Is this what you’re looking for?

And your project files contain the high quality render files. I think you want your events and your projects on the same drive.

August 2, 2011 at 9:18 pm in reply to: DVD studio pro

Personally, I’m getting less and less satisfied with the look of dvds.

I still use DVD Studio Pro for mastering standard def discs, but anymore I am posting high def videos, on dropbox, youtube or my mobile me gallery, until that goes away.

Vimeo has a pro level for $199/year, and it streams on phones and pads. Could be a good way to go.

What other options are people using?

August 2, 2011 at 7:38 pm in reply to: The old one still works

What if a facility wanted to add an Adobe license, but they were still running CS4? Can they call Adobe and order one, or will Adobe only sell them a new license for CS5.5 and a pile of upgrades for the other workstations?

At least CS5.5 will open CS4 projects.

Honestly, who else besides Apple would have the temerity and the audacity to create a new version of software that can’t open the old projects?

What if a new itunes didn’t play any of your old music? Or Photoshop didn’t open the old psd files?

Apple would create a whole lot of good will if they bundled the old FCS3 with the new FCX, just practically gave the old software away with the purchase of the new. This would cost Apple nothing, since it’s EOL’d, and it would allow houses to add more editing seats, and keep in business until FCX is ready for primetime. Giving away FCS3 could also help stop the masses of people fleeing to Avid and Premiere.

I believe that FCX will be ready for primetime someday.
I believe that Apple will make up for the crap that came along with all the very cool new functions.
I believe we are heading towards a tapeless world without edls.

Meanwhile, I’ve edited several of my broadcast projects in FCX, and I thought with a little time I’d get over the learning curve.

I’m discovering it’s not about the learning. I’m getting very well versed on where everything is. The problem is that to do the sorts of layering and audio finessing I’m used to, is quite painful. It takes me 5 times as long to do anything with it, and I don’t expect that will change, until they come up with an update.

August 2, 2011 at 7:09 pm in reply to: Anyone notice cross fades look different?

It may be the curves. Just for fun, I tried creating a cross dissolve in Motion and publishing it in FCX. It was linear, and it looked quite similar to the way FCX creates fades now.

I also tried putting a clip on V2, and using the fade handles, which look like they have a bit of a curve to them. If that’s the case, it might explain why the incoming clip seems to pop in more suddenly than it used to.

If I get some time, I may try creating one with more of an s-curve.

There’s a dark irony, where even the simplest, most popular transition requires a workaround!!

  • Danny…

I ran into something similar I described in “My Audio Misadventures”.

Will you please try this and tell me if it works. It did for me.

The clip that’s playing beyond its edit boundary… replace it with itself.

To do this, I select the clip, then move the skimmer/white line to the start of the clip. Hit SHFT-F to match-frame the clip in the event browser. Hit “I” to set this matched frame as the in-point, drag this back onto itself in the timeline, and when the menu comes up, select “replace from start”.

This worked for me, and I’d be more than curious to see if it works for you.

This bug drove me crazy, and this was the only way I figured out how to deal with it, besides going back to FCP7 and starting over.

July 30, 2011 at 6:22 pm in reply to: Beware the zero length gap!

Alex… good tip. This is why I love these forums.

Alas, no. The gap does not have a subframe length! It’s exactly zero hours, zero minutes, zero frames and zero subframes.

    And it’s very repeatable.

Add a bit of gap into a shot or between two shots with OPT-W. Press T to trim, and select the start of the gap. Hit “” to make sure you are performing a rolling edit, and roll it to the end of the gap, until it will roll no more. You can’t see it, but there’s a zero length gap there.

I’ll keep looking to see if it interferes with any functionality.
