  • Changing an anchor point

Posted by Lawrence Eaton on August 2, 2011 at 6:46 pm

I’m looking at FCP X and trying to work out how to change an anchor point and I’m sure it’s easy but not to this chap.

    Can anyone help me please?

    Regards,

    Lawrence

I’m not in front of the box right now, but I believe once you activate the transform tool (Shift + T) in the bottom left hand corner of the viewer, jump over to the video inspector pane and you should find controls for anchor x and Y.

From memory, unfortunately I don’t think there is an on screen control for this to position it in the viewer. You have to adjust the x,y values of anchor in the inspector.

    Cheers,

    thanks Brendan,

I think I was looking for something more ‘visual’ to be able to change the anchors. Oh well, get my calculator out now.

Position the playhead where you want the anchor to move to. Command-Option click at that point. Both the playhead and the clip connection will jump to that point.

    Try this…

There does not seem to be an overlay that shows you the center, only the safe title, so I created a simple one in photoshop.

Single vertical line, and a single horizontal line.

Connect the cross over the clip you want to adjust the anchor point of.

Adjust the X and Y until the point you want is directly in the center.
Now put the X and Y values of the anchor points into the X and Y position.

Now when you rotate, it rotates around the point you selected.

Is this what you’re looking for?

I’m calling it FCX. They took the “pro” out, so I will too.
I’ll reconsider after the first upgrade.

Did u ever find out how to move it with the mouse?
Seems I remember seeing a tutorial on how to do it but I can’t find it.

I’m a few years late, but if you open the inspector there’s a little box at the top of the transform settings. If you click it, it’ll bring up a bounding box for your layer with a center point.

Also, the x&y coordinates can be treated like sliders. You don’t have to type in a value. If you click and drag on any of the numbers in the inspector they will change as if you were using a slider. It’d still be nice to be able to move the anchor point with your mouse, but I’m currently in the middle of a project that involves doing this a lot, and it hasn’t been that bad.
