Well, yeah, sort of.
They all were com.apple.FinalCut.plist
But then they had a suffix of 7 characters of alphanumeric gibberish. For some reason there were a large number of them. I noticed the same with itunes, quicktime x, and apple apps.
I don’t understand why there would be many copies of the preference files, unless perhaps every time the app crashed, it left a copy of the preferences. 47 might be how many times it’s crashed on me. Could be more. I never kept count.
I wonder if everyone else has a large number of copies of apple preferences for a number of these apps.

Nuked the preferences (all 46 of them) and it seems to be editing alright now.
Strange.
I still don’t quite get that error.

This is the crux of the matter. Can we be professional and still use X in public? It’s one thing to wrestle with it in our dark edit closets, but to go out where people can see us. Horrors.
I have been using X to edit broadcast tv stories for our show, and frequently, I’ll camp out on a sofa in our office space, with my project on a orange-bumpered Lacie firewire drive and edit away. My co-workers seem impressed with not just the outcome, which I could achieve on a number of different NLEs, but when I show them how FCX works, and how snappy the interface it, and all the cool tools it has, they are all appropriately impressed.
That is until I start getting the beachball from some unknown analysis happening under the hood, or I tell them the extra work I need to do to get my stem tracks out.
The moral of Bill’s story I believe is that there’s enough in this app right now, to make it a welcome tool in our kit. It’s working right now, and it’s only going to get better.
I just wish it would happen faster.
I had a fun job recently at an auction, where a camera gathered interviews with people as they arrived, they passed the cards to me to ingest on my MBP. I cut 6 or 7 good comments together with a pre-built open that I made in Motion, and quickly added lower thirds using a motion template I built based on the artwork from the fundraiser’s invitation. To top it off, the windows computer they were using for the powerpoint was sketchy playing back my mp4s, so I played it live out of my laptop right onto the screen for all the well-dressed attendees. We did three different videos during the first hour of the program, and everyone was impressed, and we all got paid.
This was FCP7, but I could have done this in FCX if I had it then.
It’s a $300 application with a lot of power and innovation. I’m looking forward to watching it mature.

Finally getting around to reading today’s posts. This was a very good question David, even if it’s a bit loaded.

Not at all. It’s certainly an interesting idea. If you’re trying to take the process of non-linear editing back to the drawing board, I can see the appeal of this, but in the end, if it doesn’t make it easier to get the desired result, what good is it except as an intellectual exercise? I can make my visual edits fairly quickly and easily in X, but I’m taking much longer to finesse the audio, which is ironic because Apple doesn’t want me to farm that out to protools, but do it all in the app. So why isn’t it easier?

Apple is certainly a master in the game-changing business. Time after time, they make big bold moves, and they’ve changee the world as we know it. Final Cut Pro was certainly one of those things. It changed the face of editing, making it affordable and functional.
Final Cut X is not even close. It’s like they re-invented the car with an innovative new engine and classy styling, but they didn’t know when to stop re-tooling things, and they put the controls in different places so nobody could drive the thing without a great deal of difficulty.
Apple has certainly had mis-steps, but has it ever had quite the same liability for their user base? Apple deserves all the hate aimed their way.

Not at all. I’m intrigued by the new interface and I’ve tried hard to make it work. You’ve all read my posts. I can’t understand why they took all of these great, innovative tools, and basically cut the balls out of the thing by putting it in this awkward interface. I figure they will find ways to make it better, but only by creating more tools that would never be necessary if they never went with the magnetic timeline.
Best case scenario… Apple will give us back our ability to use a professional monitor and multi-clips. We will be given back our ability to round-trip for audio and color correcting. Someone will figure out how to use xml to go back and forth between 7 and X. One by one, Apple will address every little missing thing.
Finally, some genius will figure out how to get their new parent/child timeline paradigm to look and act like the good old track based editing that still works so much better for us, so that we will be able to make it work either way.
Everyone keeps talking about what a small share of their business are the pros like us. I’ll tell you that they can sell all of the ipods and ipads they want, but there’s value in having such a high-end user base that uses their tools. I consider the $2k plus that I paid for my MBP to be an investment in an awesomeness that gives me some of the same creative power as the people that inspire me. I’m editing on the same program that Walter Murch used to edit Cold Mountain (or did). Even Final Cut Express users knew that what they’ve learned to do on their stripped-down application would translate should they ever decide to upgrade to the pro app.
That’s all gone, and I’m sad because of what FCP8 could have been.
I’ll continue to use X, but I’ll mutter dozens of little curses while I do it, wondering when they’ll finally fix this or that. Eventually I’ll make the jump and start trying to use Premiere, which I got for a very good price… thank you Apple. I’d still rather have FCP8.

I generally edit everything in native HD, and export a finished QT movie, then I’ll put the HD QT file through compressor to create the SD assets for my dvd.
I’m leary of the presets in the Share menu. Is this what gave you the poor dvd results?
I’ve gotten good results from this.

I’m not sold on the tracklessness either. I know alot of that is the habits I’ve become entrenched in, but I still question the viability of the magnetic interface. I hope they prove me wrong.
As far as getting around the project, the timeline index I think is an incredible tool. You can use it to instantly find and select all sorts of things. I could find a whoosh in a 20 minute timeline instantly. That, combined with roles is certainly NOT the same as tracks, but it’s impressive in its own way.
Do we imagine a time when DAWs will be trackless? Are there things they could add to the interface to make that work? Could we use colored clips on the timeline? Perhaps establish an order to how the clips are stacked in the timeline? Dialogue roles go on top. Music roles go under the dialogue. Effects go on the bottom.
I still think ultimately that by the time they add all of the functionality, we’ll realize it’s just a whole lot easier to just deal with tracks.

I get the same way when I drive to work in traffic instead of riding my bicycle. Deep emotional frustration.
I have been avoiding going back to FCP7. Every time I start a new edit, I tell myself “just one more” and start the thing in X.
I’ve written about how I feel like I’m playing Russian Roulette, because I know there will be some sort of catastrophic event that will wipe out hours or more of my work, and make me start an edit over from the beginning.
There is so much that is still wrong with it, and we’ve been talking about that over and over, but there is so much that is cutting edge, and that’s what I’m addicted to on a deep emotional level.
Is it faster for me? With the current state of the interface, it’s probably close to a wash. With the bugs and spinning beachballs I still get, I think it’s slower.
I’m waiting for that event, because that’s probably where I’ll walk away from X until they fix the stuff that’s broken.
I literally want to scream out loud when I have to decide between putting effects in a bunch of clips and adjusting them individually, or copying the effect from one clip to another and fixing all the effects I didn’t want changed including audio levels for crying out loud. There are too many things like that that need to be fixed.

No, it comes with Angry Editors.
And maybe my analogy wasn’t the best, but if I couldn’t bring in my old aps, or my old contact list, or calendar, it would be worse than annoying. If Adobe made a new Photoshop that couldn’t open old psd files, there would be just as strong a revolt.
Personally, I’m keeping FCP7 around for as long as I can for those times I need to retool an old project. It would be nice to be able to use the new tools with the legacy work.
Is Apple unfairly taking bad heat for all of this? Are editors prematurely leaving Apple for Avid and Adobe? Can they afford to keep using FCS3 for the next several years until FCX gets back the missing tools?
FCX is working for me, but barely. I’m still hitting bugs, workarounds and slow-downs.

I understand, and I don’t expect everything to translate, however if FCX could open up as much of my FCP7 project as PP can, that would be wonderful.

Of course not, but what besides desire keeps them from doing it? It could have saved a whole lot of pain for the editing community, and for their own image in that community. And I wouldn’t be happy about spending as much or more as I’m spending for FCX, for the limited translation of CatDV.
I’m sure someone will develop a cost efficient limited translation between FCP7 and FCX. I expect that the third parties will give us some wonderful tools, but seriously, can’t we agree that Apple should own this one?
If they sold me the new iPhone, and told me that I had to wait for third party developers to give me the ability to make calls to the people I used to call on my old phone, I’d start looking for another phone.

Third party solutions to the rescue. Yes, for many things this makes sense, but when Adobe Premiere can open up FCP7 projects, and FCX can’t, that’s just wrong.
Not everyone needs OMF, or EDL, but everyone can benefit from the ability to open old projects.
Apple should own this one. Gee, can they afford to pay a team of coders to do the translation necessary to go between FCX and FCP7? I think so.
