Ok… a range. Here’s another idea.
You can take any clip, but why not create a still that’s your project size so it won’t need rendering. Call it “Fix this” or anything you want.
Put it in your event browser.
Now you can set your range in the timeline, and use the “Q” key to place this “marker clip” above the timeline.
Keep doing this until you have all of your fixes marked with this clip in the top lane.
It’s a simple matter to use the timeline index to find and select all of these temporary clips, and you can disable them with the V key to give them that ghostly look. You can also assign a role for them, and use the roles index to collapse them to easily distinguish them from the other clips, or to highlight them all by selecting the role.
There are so many tools in FCX, and so many ways to do just about everything.

I think you’re saying that when you make your first trim, the timecode is now changed for the rest of the timeline, so your instructions don’t match anymore.
Here’s an easy suggestion: start making your changes from the end of the timeline and work your way to the beginning.
We live in a non-linear world. We can make our dessert first.
My other ploy is to lift out all of the bits you want excised, leaving gaps in your entire timeline, that you will close up and heal once you’ve make the initial cuts.

Yeah, just what I was afraid of.
I added one clip to a timeline with 72 other used clips. The one clip was from the archive drive, and the 72 other clips were already in my event.
When I consolidated the project, FCX created a new event, put aliases for the 73 clips in the “original media” folder for the new project, then started to replace all of the aliases by copying the media. I let it get 4% done before I stopped it.
By the way, it wouldn’t let me stop the process, or quit the program until the process stopped, or delete the event until the background process stopped.
I changed the clip references to the original media, crashed out of it, moved the event folder with the new clips to hide it and reopened FCX. Everything was back to where it was before I tried consolidating.
Does this match your experience? Might I have done something differently from you?
I believe that what I’m trying to do is not abnormal. Nor should it be especially difficult to execute, although I can’t think of how I would do this in FCP7.
I think I may need to create a copy of my timeline, with only the media from the archive drive, then consolidate THAT, then try to change the references in my original timeline to the newly copied media. Either way it’s a bit of a mess.

Have you used the consolidate function Jeremy?
If I select “Copy Used Clips only” it seems like it should do what I want it to do. I’m still afraid of copying over all of the media I already have on the drive.

I wish they would give away Final Cut Studio 3 for free to people who purchase the new FCX. I think this would be a fantastic value, keep more people in the Apple camp, and help send the message that Studio 3 is still awesome, and that while FCX isn’t quite a complete replacement Final Cut Pro yet (I still need FCP7 for many many things), it’s headed that way.

Both quicktime 7 and quicktime X have a loop function if you’re playing off of a mac. It’s under the View menu. Command L is the keyboard shortcut.

You want to do this in Final cut Pro X, right?
It’s pretty simple. Use the range tool to select the portion of the clip that you want to slow down, with the out point at the place you want it to stop.
Select the pull down in the retime menu, and click on “Choose Speed Ramp > to 0%”You’ll see that it divides the clip into four ranges with diminishing speeds. You can adjust each segment to make it faster or slower as you’d like.
This will lengthen your clip in the timeline. If I don’t want to extend the length of the timeline, I’ll lift the clip from the timeline before applying my speed change, trimming it then placing it back in my timeline.

We never had to work to anthropomorphize Apple. Apple had a face, and usually walked around barefoot in need of a bath.
I think there is more than a little fear that Apple without Steve Jobs may be the end of it for the pro market.
I’m halfway through the biography, and when Jobs returned to Apple, he drew vertical and horizontal lines on a white board, indicating desktops for the pros and consumer markets, and portables for the pro and consumer markets. Obviously the consumer side has thrown this model out of balance. If anyone can afford to keep it’s pro market fed, even if it’s not as profitable as the consumer side, it would be Apple.
I hope they continue do just that.

Is Apple worried about a competitor coming up with it’s own magnetic timeline? I doubt it. I think at this point it’s less of keeping their plans secret, and a lot more of communicating to people who depend on these tools for their livelihood, that Apple is trying to prepare a wonderful future for them.
Pulling legacy Final Cut sounded like a strong message that they were abandoning the pro market. If that’s not the message they wanted to send, they need to make sure they tell us. Yet here we are continuing to divine what Apple is thinking.
My world hasn’t been turned upside down, and I’m intrigued by the new stuff, so I’m willing to ride it out.
As for their launches, when they come out with an ipod or ipad, people can’t wait to get them. FCX was snuck out without a lot of hoopla, and people clamored for their money back, and people rushed to Avid and Adobe. Apple backpedaled, and sort of put it back.
Yeah, when they’re doing things right, we all happily get in line behind them. I’d love to get our daily show production on FCX. It’s hard to give my managers an answer when they say “is Apple going to keep with this, or abandon it like Xsan, Smoke, Color and legacy FCP?”
I’d love to shoot a fly-on-the-wall documentary with the team in Cupertino.
