  • How to slow down a video gradually from 100% down to 0%

Sometimes in news we need to have a video run full speed and then instead of keep showing the video or cutting to black we reduce the video from 100% to 90% to 80% all the way down to 0% so there is a lot of “tail” on the end of the video.

Typically we do this for Sound-on-tape and at the end of the bite we leave the video running for the director to cut away from the shot.

Is there an easy way to do this? Thanks,

You want to do this in Final cut Pro X, right?

It’s pretty simple. Use the range tool to select the portion of the clip that you want to slow down, with the out point at the place you want it to stop.
Select the pull down in the retime menu, and click on “Choose Speed Ramp > to 0%”

You’ll see that it divides the clip into four ranges with diminishing speeds. You can adjust each segment to make it faster or slower as you’d like.

This will lengthen your clip in the timeline. If I don’t want to extend the length of the timeline, I’ll lift the clip from the timeline before applying my speed change, trimming it then placing it back in my timeline.
