I’m not sure if this is worth anything…. but from time to time, my FCP system seems to just trash its own prefs and clear out the recently loaded programs. I have a feeling that is is something that Apple does on occassion just to mess with our minds…

Jason…. I feel your pain! At my post house, we also have a G4 (now a DVD station) with the same characteristics as yours. I have found that anything above DV50 is completely out of the question, especiallly HDV. HDV is soooo processor intensive that the G4 cannot keep up. If you are going to work in HDV more in the future…. You really need to just bite the bullet and get the best G5 you can afford with the maos t amount of memory you can afford. Sorry, bud.

You might want to try the Kona System Test to check the speed of your drives. You might have a program installed that is slowing down your drives OR you have a progrma running in the background that is slowing down your system.

I agree with all the guys here! I, too, had the same problem when I switched over. Its not a FCP thing, its a digial audio thingy…
You have to keep in mind that digial audio has a much greater frequency range than analog audio, therefore, your FCP might sound great, but when you dub it to BetaSP, the level meters barely move and then sometimes they will peak really high. Sadly enough, most broadcast facilities still cannot handle digital audio and we have to crush this frequency range to a narrow one.
Personally, I have to agree with the consenus here… Mix the audio for your ears and let it peak at -6, set your tone aywhere from -20 to -16. Unity for digital audio is -20, so that would be a good start to work with. I would have to say, the next project you have… set your tone to -16 (to be conservative) and see how your levels are when you dub to BetaSP. After that, if the levels are better, lower your tone to -18, then to -20, and look at the results.

Well, Paul…. There again, it could be any number of things that can corrupt media. The next question that has to be asked is… when was the last time you formatted your RAID? You do know that you can’t defrag a RAID so the only solution to combat this is to copy your media to a temporary drive and reformat your RAID, when you copy the media back, it will be placed in correct order – not fragmented throughout the drive.
Over time, any drive, can be seriously fragmented on any operating system on any platform. Just that some are more prone to it than others. That’s why we have to reformat from time to time. About every six months is a good rule of thumb, in our production house.

Well… You’ll need a deck to capture from like the PDW-F70 XDCAM HD deck. I would hook it up HD-SDI and capture using the DVCPRO HD codec – 1080i

Here’s something you REALLY need to consider. When the Intel boxes finally come out, there are sure to be a whole lot of problems with software. I would guess that it will take about a year for the software to catchup with the machines. So…. my advice is to go ahead and get a Quad G5 and wait a couple of years before buying an Intel box.
But that’s my two cents worth…..

For what purpose are you doing this for? The reason I ask is, if you are doing this for yourself, contact Canopus about your problem. If this is for a client and you are going to be able to make some money on this – I would consider returning the Canopus and purchasing a Datavideo DAC-30. It will do everything you need and then some.

You have a very common problem. In order to monitor HDV thru Final Cut Pro, you must have a capture card such as any of the AJA or Blackmagic cards to monitor HDV. Firewire will not work for monitoring HDV. This is the big headache that everybody whose using HDV only and a firewire connection is finding out.
The only other possibility is to monitor the video out of your camera or deck via the composite or S-Video outputs. But as for monitoring thru FCP, forget it unless you have a capture card capable of monitoring HDV.
