Thanks’ for that Michael,
not really up to speed in Motion yet so am unlikely to be able to publish an effect – but I can have a go – everybody else is doing and don’t like feel left out!
It seems that Motion is really the hidden strength behind FCPX.
I honestly think that in a years time people will wonder what all the fuss was about.
So Yeah, it would be great to have that eyedropper white balance back under my fingers.

Sounds like a cement mixer.
Well I can’t hear mine and it’s 2 feet away from me on the floor by my desk.
As to connectivity to monitors – that’s something for you to work out because it will depend on what inputs your monitor has.
The 5770 has one dual-link DVI port and two mini Display ports.
I bought a minidisplay to DVI connector from the Apple Store and a DV1 to VGA connector from the local computer shop.

I put a ATI Radeon 5770 in my 2009 Mac pro – works absolutely fine. Should be fine for you too.
I bought it from Jigsaw Systems. They recommended it.

Oh and a cup of tea as well please . . .
Before installing vers 2 I had managed to change the colour and the width of the lines through using the HUD.
These were the changeable parameters of the digital heaven plugin.
I hope you are getting some paid work done as well

Hey Brendan,
That’s so useful, I use a digital Heaven plugin for this purpose in fcp7, so this will be dead right for FCPX.
Is there a way, through opening up in Motion, of changing the colours of the guides as at the moment I am working against a white background.
I have tried to do this but with no affect on your published fx.

No, not good enough yet.
I have to say it’s the core issue that is stopping me totally migrating to a FCP X work flow.
I’ve bought a new desktop computer monitor 1920×1040 HD, another to follow, but that doesn’t fill me with total confidence.
I calibrate it with a Huey Pro calibrator.
I suppose I’m just used to a 3 monitor setup.

According to Heath Knight this was sent to him last week. It unfortunately seems to confirm what everyone
has been thinking that external monitoring onto a calibrated monitor through the MXO2 range will not work.I had hoped that they would connect to one of those elusive hooks I’ve read about. I’ve posted on the Matrox site but they have not responded with any clarification yet. I guess they are too busy to talk.

Is there any way this could be added to the effects section within the command editor so that a keyboard shortcut could be applied to it?
Or is the command editor an uneditable item, locked off?

Yes, totally frustrating and something that surely will have to be sorted out.
I’ve just tried in advance of a job we are doing this week to import clips from a GoPro. The very nature of a GoPro is that you stick it on things, turn it on and look at what what you’ve got afterwards. In my case we stick it on vehicles as they do on Top Gear.
So there is an enormous amount of redundant material. So to only be able to set one range at a time on import is a real pain because within one 10 minute clip there might be 3 or 4 short sections that you want actually use.
So selective import doesn’t work really when you have a bunch of clips to process. Back to the old way of doing it – grab the lot – select the bits that you want – edit them together – export and import them and get rid of the bulky import file.
FCP X, with its ProRes 422 base level, seems to have little regard for the huge amount of data storage that it generates. Data storage, with all the backups, is expensive and it’s a cost that is difficult, in todays financial climate, to pass onto a client.
So lets hope that intelligent digital ingest is one of the areas that is improved in the next update.
As long as the operating systems support it, FCP7 is going to be an essential pre production tool in relation to importing files intelligently. We use a Canon XF305 as well as Canon DSLRs and until Canon update their XF utility FCP7 is the only way of getting their files onto the system without resorting to
cheap and crude standalone programmes.Mark Dobson
