Mark and Rick are so right. Do search this site and you’ll find lots of suggestions but keep in mind, no matter how much you spend on lights, or the coolest camera, you should first understand “how” to light properly for the given situation and mood. Good lighting tells a much better story than just good lights.

I’m still trying to figure this one out. If I set it to “DV” the capture window shows time code running and it says it’s playing but the capture screen is black and no audio. I went ahead and captured anyhow and lo and behold it captured both video and audio even though the capture screen was blank and silent. I’d greatly appreciate any ideas.

    Hi Chris,
Thanks for responding! I did have it on and fw plugged in beforehand. I have it set to HDV and deck control is off. I basically tried every variation I could think of including rebooting. I just tried capturing in FCP7 and that worked just fine. I could see video and hear audio during capture. Fortunately 99% of the time we record to hard drive and the tape is only used as an instant archive. But it would be nice to know how to get this to work when I need it.

  • If you only see one window, can you just gel that and hang black cloth/duv to block the light from the other windows from spilling onto your scene? If the remaining window is large but you never see all of it then you can flag off the parts you don’t see and reduce the amount of correction you need even more.

The curler is just one idea that worked for me in a couple situations. I’ve also used foam, triangles, etc. The curler never touched skin. It was between clothing or behind a tie. I think I tried it because the guy has a silk shirt and tie and this provided an “isolation cage”, (I just made that term up:) ). You can easily cut the nubs off by the way. If nothing else this thread illustrates what the others said, there is no one perfect solution.

I’ve attached a photo of said curler. I have used a tiny piece of foam just holding the cord itself to set the mic in the curler, leaving the mic head floating and exposed.

You are brilliant John! I have our camera setup with the Detail “off”. We prefer it this way and have had it set for a few years. I’m so used to that setup I didn’t even consider it. A case of the simplest solution was right in front of me. I should have paid attention to the details:) (sorry).

I agree with what Steve says. If it turns out the “one light” rule holds then my suggestion, like Steve’s, would be a soft box I prefer soft bounce for fill over a reflector but that’s a matter of taste. Bead board or foam core is nice. Try something white on one side and black on the other in case you decide negative fill is better.

The lamp-on-the-dslr hotshoe a the key should be a last resort and should have some diffusion. Instead I’d use it as a very low level eyelight only. Let the soft box/bounce do your modelling. And-you’ve snuck in a second light:)
