January 7, 2009 at 4:45 pm in reply to: Problems capturing DVD through S-Video on AJA IOYou will get much better results if you rip the DVDs using MPEG Streamclip. Using the software you are staying in an all digital path unlike capturing S-video in which you convert to analog and then back to digital.

Not to be mean, but why did you buy a “computer display” to monitor your video output from the AJA IoHD?
I’ve been looking at the JVC Highend broadcast LCDs with HD-SDI ins that also give you a PIP waveform monitor and audio meters.

Well I just discovered that the HDMI port only supports 8-bit color so you might want to feed the IoHD with the HD-SDI signal and see if that works/looks better.
I have confirmed the 8-bit color definitely on the HDMI output as it looks far worse than even the analog component out.

December 7, 2008 at 8:14 pm in reply to: NO REAL-TIME EXTERNAL VIDEO AJA iO LD and LA with FCP- Blackmagic INTENSITYWell the only thing I can think of is even though you have selected to view all frames, you still need to tell the AJA what type of signal you are sending it (DV25, uncompressed 8bit, 720p59.95, 1080i29.97, etc etc) from the view external video using — select the right option for your timeline.

So if I understand you correctly Gary, the black level in HD is 0 even on a waveform monitor; and in FCP. So basically I don’t have to worry about any color or luma (255 whites) levels in After Effects as long as I render out using Rec709 color space?
The sync issue I am referring to is I had a png that I generated in photoshop; whenever I dropped that into my timeline and output through the Io, the video sync would go crazy — video that I had already captured played back fine.
Why do you say to stop using 16bit color in AE; if I use 8bit then I will get banding on color gradients.
I just read a thread that came up in a search on this very forum about people wanting to render out from AfterEffects using trillions of colors to 10bit based video; which I assume would be from 16bit AfterEffects projects.
I appreciate your feedback since I am trying to learn as much as I can before I need start HD editing and get into trouble.

Okay I found Jeremey’s thread so the next question? HD 709 or HD 709 (16-235)?

I’ll have to let you know Monday when I get back into the shop. As far as service… I don’t think so; parts….nada would be my guess. That is why I suggested maybe a digital S deck that plays all — a lot of money though just to sync some VHS tapes when capturing.
Another idea may be to use an external TBC that you can sync from your house and also sync the AJA with the same source. That may do it.

JVC might still have a digital-svhs deck that can read regular VHS/SVHS tapes that has a TBC built in. JVC did make a professional SVHS deck with reference and component out. We own one but I guard with my life as it is the only VHS deck that interfaces clean to our component switching rack. (where is a MPF100 when you need one…)
Where are you located Jeremy?

Just out of curiosity, why not use the component output of the Io into the UV1800. You can then use the Io composite out to sync the 1800 if you do not have house sync. The 1800 should have auto termination on the composite and reference inputs — but they can fail.
When I hook our IoLA or IoHD to beta decks, I always use the component output for the video, and the composite out (with the IoLA) or the house sync (IoHD) to reference the Beta Deck. I have both audio wise going into a mixer, where from there it would go into the deck for recording; but you can run the analog XLR out from the Io directly into the UVW1800.
Also make sure the 1800 is set to the correct input.
