    Not true.

I was out of town and needed to retreive some of our own video for a project I was working on but forgot to bring the original files with me.

I used Jaksta to recapture the progressive download off of first Vimeo and then Youtube, converted the files to ProRes and was able to edit with them but when I tried to convert back to .mp4’s Final Cut kept giving me an errot message and wouldn’t let me do it. Wouldn’t let me re-compress into any format. Once I removed the ripped files all was well. They were the problem.

In the past, I’ve been asked make DVD masters with both analog and digital copy protection. As I recall, after the copy protection was implemented it would be possible to make a first generation copy of the disc but no more. I think that there is a similar type of encodong going on here. Probably something that was developed ahead of the antipiracy law that was about to come up in congress but then got shot down. Just a guess…

I’d like to find out how this is being done.

    Thanks Craig.
Those links look like they might work (except for the Final Cut plug in).
I eventually got the utility from the most obvious source: the software that came with the camera.
    Forgot to look there. Duh.
