No way. I can’t see them launching without 8 and 12 core options.

Agreed. But there’s a difference between launching in time for holiday shopping and year end.
As long as you hit the “buy” button before the end of this year- you’re good.
Remember Apple initially conservative estimate on getting the iPadMini Retina out the door. “End of November” is what they promised. But they had that thing on sale by November 12.

That’s not necessarily indicative of anything.
Larry’s presentation at IBC was on September 15th. If FCPX 10.1 were to launch tomorrow, that will still be over two and a half months ago. I have no idea how long any of the trainers who receive early access get the software before launch, but it could be very conceivably be less time than that. So Larry could have been completely truthful that he hadn’t see anything– yet.
Let’s not confuse trainers with beta testers for Apple, who help the dev team work thru bugs and workflow issues; and who see the software well before reviewers and trainers.

Phil Schiller’s big pitch with the MacPro seemed to be OpenCL, where GPU cores can be tasked to perform numerical tasks historically left to the CPU. I’ve also heard it referred to as “Apple’s Mercury playback engine”.
If FCPX leans on OpenCL even more, then the standard dual-GPU configuration of the new MacPro really starts to make sense.

That’s pretty weak Andy. You make an accusation, provide no evidence, then ask me to prove you wrong.
Larry had to have early access for the last feature release [10.0.6], since his updated training was up the week of release. I can’t find exact dates but that’s the way it looks from here.
Most of the trainers don’t get early access to the maintenance releases.
Again, we’ll see. Maybe he is now, but I don’t see any sign from before. He’s one of the few people who gets sit down meetings with them at NAB.

Larry has had early access on every major X release up to this point.
We’ll only know once 10.1 is out and we see who has “at the ready” training for sale whether he’s been excluded from this list.

I’ve pointed out to Alex that his calculations for $9,200 are off. He’s doing it as a direct currency conversion, whereas the spread between US and Canadian prices on the Apple products isn’t nearly that wide. But he’s taking the conservative tact. I’m betting the CN$9,700 config will be closer to US$9,500.
The other place your off is the SSDs. A 512GB upgrade on the iMac is $500, and 1TB is $1,000. That will be exactly the same for the MacPro according to my info.

Mark, see my thread below on additional MacPro pricing info that was given to me by Apple (probably prematurely).
It will be interesting to see if having Apple’s assembly centre in the US has any measurable effect on BTO ship times.
As for X, the FCPX dev team hasn’t spent the last 15 months doing just optimizations for the MacPro- a machine that will likely only represent a single digit percentage of overall FCPX users. Alex4D’s articles point to some foundational changes and some new features. But I think we’ll see some interesting surprises too.
As for delivery, soon. Tomorrow or next Tues for sure. If these were consumer products Apple would never have let the release run this late, but since Apple isn’t worried about the “Holiday rush” on MacPro and FCPX sales, it’s a special case.
