From the pervious AJA products we have, the two AJA I/O’s and an earlier SD AJA card. We had set the FCP audio levels at -10db and fed it SDI into the Digibeta deck. The audio reading was dead on “full display ‘-20db'”/ “fine display ‘0’”. This is how we have been judging correct levels. Also looking at the program levels on the deck to make it’s within broadcast standards. When we received the KONA 2 card all audio adjustments changed. ( Please read above for my KONA 2 issues.) I’m trying to look for a consistence in the products to minimums potential problems. Mastering to video tape needs to be an accurate profession w/ precision tools. If the tools are not precise then the art of mastering is not.
If your facility has Digibeta, DV (SDI), D5 and/or HDCAM, please perform some test and post them.

Thank you guys for your responses,

Thank you so much for your reply. SDI embedded audio should not be off what so ever. This is really poor on AJA part. The previous drivers were not perfect but manageable. Currently having the drivers 8+db is pretty severe. My clients supply us with files all time for tape output. Having audio that’s off and compensating the levels, really compromises the integrity. I really hope more people look into this and report it to AJA.

    Thank again

The KONA2 Audio FAQ pdf supplied by AJA is for the earlier drivers. My problem only pertains to the newest release. For your information my sound configuration is as follows.

System Pref. > Sound > Sound Effects >Play alerts and sound effects through: Line Out
System Pref. > Sound > Output> AJA Kona PCI Card > Setting for the Selected device: The selected device has no output controls
System Pref. > Sound > Output> Output Volume > mute

And still my SDI embedded audio is +10db higher when outputting to Digibeta or even HD CAM.
Also by deselecting in the AJA Control Panel > Setup > Audio Setup : un-checking or checking “Lock Input Audio Gain to Unity”. Does not effect out going audio.

If you are on the latest drivers for the Kona 2 and are on Tiger 10.4.4, please run at test. Would like to know if you are getting the same results.

Thank you sooo much for your help

    response:
“Open up the Kona control panel and find the option in there to uncheck ‘lock input gain to unity'”.

    reply:
Spoke w/ AJA Tech support and they said it would only affect incoming audio.
SDI audio incoming is right on but on output it is off +10db.

Have you done a test? Curious about what’s happening on your system.

    Thanks for the reply

  • ” would not worry too much about the log RGB unless you are getting footage from a spirtit telecine, 950, genesis or viper cameras… ”

so capturing D-5 footage with this codec would be overkill…right??

  • “you can downconvert in real time to analog or HD-sdi, so whatever you are hooked up to would be good in the 601 space”

We’ve viewed the downconvert on HD 1080 59.94, 60i ect. on a NTSC Sony monitor and it looked great.
But when it came to 23.98psf the reference was whacked out. Could not get proper sync.
    Any suggestions???
