[Michael Horton] “I think this law is alive and well in the GPU. “

You’re very correct, but *only* on the Windows side of things. The OpenGL cards we currently can choose from on the Mac side is a complete and utter joke. On Windows, you can get a dual PCI-E setup using two nVidia FX4400 graphics cards for the ultimate in OpenGL performance. nVidia and ATI offer a mere *fraction* of that kind of performance. I mean, it’s literally like comparing a McLaren F1 to a scooter. I have no inconceivable reason why ATI, nVidia or 3DLabs wont produce high-end workstation display cards on the Mac. Even though we don’t have PCI-E like we should, we could still benefit from much better cards on the AGP slots we have now.

[Michael Horton] “I vote for Marco to build a 3GHZ Mac. Get your team on that will ya? I got a couple interns I can send up.”

Sweet! Do these interns wear plaid mini skirts and pigtails?!!! Send ’em on over! Of course, there may be unexpected delays in the production process. A-HA! So THAT’S why they’re taking so long to produce these Mac for us!!!!!

    😉

Well don’t get me wrong. I’m not ditching the OSX platform any time soon. It’s just that the software is ahead of the hardware, including GPU performance. We use a bunch of Dells over here for 3D stuff as well. I have a render farm completely made up of Dells… something far too pricey to do on Macs, except for the Mac Mini idea I mentioned earlier.

Macs: Video editing, compositing, DVD authoring, music/audio production.
Windows: 3D animation, CD authoring and web production.

This formula will not change any time soon for us. I personally believe the above outline are the better strengths of each platform.

I just wish Apple or IBM would get the show on the road on the hardware side of things.

What bothers me is that *every* G5 at this point should all have PCI-X, not just the top two. It’s bad enough they don’t even sport a PCI-Express slot for displays! I think they’re just doing these minor, tiny technology bumps because Moore’s Law is over and there’s nothing bigger to do. This was clear to me when the Mac Mini came out. Yes, I think the Mac Mini is way cool and I’m thinking of buying 10 of them to use as a render farm, but Apple has never made a low-cost Mac in their history… they had to deliver SOMETHING at the last MacWorld because they didn’t have any major G5 updates. What better way to do it than by making a cheap Mac and throwing in G4 CPUs that are plentiful abound!

Dual 3GHz CPUs should have been at last year’s WWDC as Steve promised and dual-core CPUs should have been at the last MacWorld to have kept Moore’s Law alive. We’re nowhere near it.

    Blah.

[Chris Poisson] “But I’ll tell you what, Compression Master3 is much faster”

This looks enticing. I’m not so much interested in their stand-alone app, but their $30 export encoder looks great. I just need something easy to spit WMVs out of the FCP timelines. And the GUI looks very similar to F4M! Still doesn’t appear to have a cropping option though! Grrrrr. I’ll definitely have to try this out. I have to believe it runs faster than F4M!!!

Yes and make sure you add a .wmv extension to it too. If I remember correctly, F4M doesn’t add it by default but I could be wrong.

I’ve had nothing but great success using this little tool. I highly recommend it to anyone’s workflow that requires sending WMV files straight from your FCP timeline (the vast majority of my clients are Windows based so this makes life easier for me). The only downside I see with F4M is that it can be a little slow to encode sometimes… even on a G5.

I do wish there were settings for cropping though. That would be a nice addition.

[Paul] “boring….I agree, no dual core, no PCIExpress, no thanks…..2 year technology at $3000….sweet deal….”

You’re right… it IS two year old technology. I’m not too impressed either. I agree: for someone coming from a G4, get this computer. For those of us with G5s already in our stable, this is nothing to switch your main computer(s) to.

    Blah.

In terms of performance for value ratio, the Dell LCDs kick ass over the Apple displays… by leaps and bounds in my opinion.

Now if Dell could only make a Mac… (it would look ugly though!)

    [gary adcock] “Damn it Marco
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas”

I know, I know, but your wife will never read these forums!

[gary adcock] “And if you wanted to win anything, you need to NOT be slapping the guy that pulls the tickets.

    (until after) “

Okay, okay… lesson learned. I’ll do much better at NAB 2006.

[Jerry Hofmann] “And then, very fast and hard too. You got me all wrong Marco. I like to watch you beat on Gary.”

Doh, that’s right!!! So you’re that voice I hear in the background that whispers, “Yeah, yeah, do it again! Harder!”

And I thought I was just going nuts!

[Jerry Hofmann] “I go just to see everyone I think, and listen to the buzz.”

Yeah, I’d say that’s my rule of thumb too!

Just my opinion, but despite the fact that there was indeed some very notable updates from Apple, AJA, BMD, etc., this year’s NAB just didn’t have the whiz-bang surprises as 2003 NAB when FCP 4 came out, AJA introduced the iO and Avid wowed us with their Mojo-Jo-Joke. That just seemed like a very exciting NAB. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there wasn’t valuable updates this year, because there definitely was. The 2003 NAB just seemed refreshing of sorts.

One of my favorite things at this year’s NAB… FinalTouch SD and HD. (To DIE for!!!) This was shown at both the Silicon Color booth and the AJA booth with a dedicated station just for it. Simply delicious.

    That and…

Ned Soltz lost a whopping 103 pounds and looks friggin’ AWESOME!
Gary Adcock doesn’t mind when I salp his ass.
Jerry Hofmann still gets jealous when I slap Gary’s ass.
Michael Horton can still whip a crowd into shape.
There’s always one guy that buys 500 LAFCPUG raffle tickets and wins all the prizes and everyone boos at him for doing so… ahhh, the fun never ends!!!
