Still strange though. I’ve never heard of a plugin set messing up a hardware’s output structure. Then again, it could’ve been messed up internally within FCP before even getting to the IO. Good to share the experience though!

Well David W., sometimes using the 2-way CC works too! Just a little reduction in overall saturation can sometimes fix a simple chroma problem.
David H., for a cheap and easy way out, you can also use the “Broadcast Safe” plugin to make sure your videos are within the NTSC legal limits.

You’d be hard pressed catching an audio engineer using a graphic EQ in a recording studio and the same should be true in the editing suite. A parametric EQ does what a graphic EQ can do but much more and with greater precision and control.
Sorry. Probably not the answer you were looking for but maybe it’ll spawn some new insight into your audio editing needs?

Just to note that viewing 4:4:4 RGB media will slightly change once it hits 4:2:2 YUV or Y’CrCb color space. Full chroma latitude will get chroma-filtered to a compressed color space. Keep in mind too that about 75% of the RGB colors will be legal in YUV NTSC once in that realm. Super-whites… not a chance. Pure 255,0,0 red… get ready for the NTSC police!
Transcoding to 10-bit uncompressed is the best way, but it’ll never be the exact same as the RGB original in more ways than one. Make sure to look at the scopes!

20L5/1 — For sure. And make sure it’s a “/1”. You can only know by its production date. Tried and true.
3202 — Probably a damn good CRT. Never used it in post though.
The JVC — Wouldn’t touch it with a 1000 foot pole. I’ve *never* had good luck with JVC monitors. So bad in fact that some could *not* calibrate even though they had blue guns and all.I think your decision to stick with CRT is a good one until a true replacement can come along. I think what will be the true “switch” will be micro LED technology. Been in the works for a while now. I’ll bet we finally see something at NAB this year even if just prototypes. Well, that’s my hope at least.
Wouldn’t give up my 20L5/1 for anything.

I just want to interject by saying that since the original poster of this thread mentioned they just want the basics for now to learn the FCP tools, I’d say that buying a pair of LCDs and and NTSC monitor isn’t required. In fact, I’ve edited video on airplanes on nothing more than a Powerbook and headphones and when I got to my destination, the cut was ready for delivery. Now don’t get me wrong, I’d much rather edit in my comfy edit suite with LCD/CRT/Plasma screens galore, but in no way is FCP an incapable editor without output devices if all you need to do is learn on it for now.
Now, when you want to start learning about color space limitations, motion artifacts and anything else related to properly using output devices for broadcast level mastering, then I’d definitely say start segueing into the idea of buying proper display devices. Plus, what if at that point you’re not interested in it anymore? Then at least you didn’t buy into all the gear hype and can “let go” with a cleaner conscious. Alternatively, if you do decide to stick with it at that point, you’ll be much better poised to know exactly what it is you want to buy than had you bought it in the beginning.
