More and more productions we deal with also go to the web (some entirely just for the web) and as a result, shooting in true 24p (i.e., not 60i with 3:2 pulldown, AKA 24pS) can be a huge benefit. The advantages are many…
– 24p (or 30p if you must) looks better on the computer screen than 60i or 24p over 60i (i.e., 24pS).
– Codecs don’t have to deal with interlacing, which can result in a better encode.
– If you must resize, you wont have to deal with interlacing.
– File sizes will be smaller which equals better bandwidth of course.And…
The same can also be said if you’re going to DVD.
True 24p isn’t just for film-outs anymore.

Look around… you can buy these for CHEAP some times. Literally for about $100. Usually you can find someone that bought it for their home theater setup and they have absolutely no idea it’s a treasured post-production facility item. I bought both of mine used years back. The first one wasn’t as cheap as the second one, but still far less than the cost of new and they’re both still running strong. I discovered this unit on my own back a couple years ago and I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned it in a forum post before… consider it a secret gem!
But shhhh, don’t tell anyone about this gem, LOL!

Glad to help out. One one other thing I forgot to mention (and this is a realitively big deal) is that the recoder wont automatically add a stupid menu on the DVD like the majority of cruddy recorders out there. It will definitely create a menu, but it’s *only* accessed by hitting the menu button on the remote. Other recorders I’ve delt with always start the DVD with an ugly menu when the DVD is inserted instead of just playing the damn video, even if there’s just one video title on the DVD! How lame! I have a Pioneer wannabe DVD recorder at home that will absolutely not let you bypass a menu on DVD startup. Sucks.
I really can’t recommend any other DVD recorder if you want a recorder that works the way we in the industry want it to work as opposed to working in a way that a consumer would want it to work.

I own two Pioneer DVR-7000 DVD recording decks and swear by them. It does in fact have a DV input and it does in fact 100% record direct from the FCP timeline. Straight digital to digital recording. This deck also has audio VU meters on it, which is very important to me as most DVD “recorders” do not.
You can also assign settings if the disk should be flagged as anamorphic, can set automatic chapter point intervals and much more.
If you get a used one, make sure to get one with a white, yellow or pink sticker dot next to the serial number (I forget which color) which indicates it has the latest revision.
I wouldn’t give up these recorders for anything!

From what you’re describing, the only Sony camera I’d suggest in your line up would be the V1U because it’s native 24p. However, have you looked into Panasonic and JVC solutions? I wouldn’t go the Canon route since they do not offer a native 24p camera.
