So I did some poking around on eBay and found these two listings…

Interesting that for $200 it comes with a 16GB card with the reader. I’ll wager it doesn’t work with the EX1, but geez, how nice would THAT be? Would be nice to see Sony and SanDisk get some competition.

Rafael: Yes, I have to believe that 720p24 will give the best results with regard to the least amount of compression artifacts. Hopefully I can spend a little time with it tomorrow. But at this point I can’t conclusively say that shooting 720 for SD is better than 1080… with so much scaling down from 1080, the results can really go in different directions. All of which in intend to test thoroughly!

Thanks Jon… I actually emailed them over the weekend! They said they might come up with such a device later this year. No luck for now though. =(
I also emailed a couple of other manufacturers, including Markertek to see if they knew of anything… so far no response. :-/

I haven’t actually tested this yet but am curious to. Does 10 seconds of 720p60 have a smaller file size than 10 seconds of 720p24 S+Q 60? If the file size IS bigger (thus creating a higher quality clip due to more I-frames) then I’ll definitely shoot this way from now on for any slo-mo. For some reason I thought S+Q mode was merely a playback “flag”, sort of like a conform.

Thanks for the link anyway, Rafael. But yeah, there’s a Horita unit that does the same sort of thing (although I’ve never heard of the company you linked to or their devices, which gives me hope that there’s something still out there that I haven’t seen since this company didn’t come up in any of my searches).
The closest thing I’ve still only found is this unit but has way more bells and whistles than I need (at a cost of around $3350)…

Still on the search as I’m not giving up yet! Steve, did you find out what that company was that you saw that might have such a “black box”?
Pretty easy… HD-SDI BNC input (with an HD-SDI loop out would be nice) and an LTC output (BNC, 1/4″ or XLR doesn’t matter to me). Seems like such a simple box to make since there are so many other “timecode” black boxes out there. Sigh.

You need to shoot in 60p to get the best results. Here’s my workflow…
Shoot 720p60
Transcode to codec of choice
Conform 720p60 to 720p24 (wish the native XD footage could conform in Cinema Tools)
Import into NLE of choice
Slow motion smooth as silk.In short, don’t bring your 720p60 footage into your NLE and apply a slow-motion filter on it… wont work the way you intend to.
Don’t forget you can also shoot in 1080p30 and conform to 1080p24. Not as much of a slow motion reduction, but still cool nonetheless.

Thanks, Rich. Yeah I’ve seen that unit from Horita. Unfortunately it strictly needs to be from an embedded HD-SDI source.
