External SxS Readers for EX1
Marco Solorio
March 13, 2008 at 8:37 pmI did a little searching on this forum, but didn’t find anything on external USB readers. Obviously Sony has the SBAC-US10 reader for SXS cards to USB. But $250? C’mon. I did find this…
https://www.synchrotech.com/product-usb/usb20_to_usb20_expresscards_host_adapter_microu2e-mv.html
https://www.synchrotech.com/product-usb/usb20_to_usb20_expresscards_host_adapter.html
Only $48 which sounds like a better ballpark price. Would be nice to see a FW800 module too.
Anyway, has anyone tried a USB reader other than Sony’s model? Would definitely like something external so we can move it to different computers as needed and without having to use the EX1 as the reader device.

March 14, 2008 at 6:24 amWe bought a reader at Fry’s Electronics but it did not work. Someone claimed in a post a few months ago that they knew of one but I never saw a follow up.

March 14, 2008 at 7:38 amhi,
problem is, that expresscards have 2 interfaces they can use (either/or/both)
PCI-Express
USB2.0so all of the current usb adapters except for Sony’s, and pc-card adapters ONLY
use the USB2.0 interface/bus.Problem is that sxs cards ONLY work via PCI-Express, so it won’t work in these
adapters….SO: Sandisk SxS cards are coming out, and surely they’ll haver their own special USB adapter
to work with….cheers

March 14, 2008 at 10:36 amI PURCHASED A PCI EXPRESS INTERNAL CARD READER THAT WORKS GREAT. I AM ADDING THE WEB SITE. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE CARD READER FOR THE SONY EX1 CARDS.
GOOD LUCK GARY.
HERE IS THE WEB SITE.

March 16, 2008 at 7:23 pmThanks everyone for the replies. I guess it looks like Sony’s reader is the only viable one at the moment. Bleh. Was hoping someone would have experimented with the Syncrotech USB device by now.
Gary, I did in fact see your earlier post on the internal reader. Might be a problem for those of us that use Macs though since there isn’t a standard 5-1/4″ slot. A USB reader would really be ideal for us though so we could swap it from station to station.

April 2, 2008 at 1:54 amI ordered one off eBay for $7. We’ll see if it works at all or kills the SxS card.
Search for “USB ExpressCard/34”

April 5, 2008 at 6:47 pmSorry about the bad news, Allen, but thanks for letting us know. Do you have a link so we know what to stay away from?

April 6, 2008 at 12:03 amSo I did some poking around on eBay and found these two listings…
https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280214891057
https://item.express.ebay.com/_W0QQitemZ120242442231QQcmdZExpressItemThe second link pretty much says it doesn’t work with PCI Express-based cards and only USB-based ones, so I guess there’s the answer.
And then I found this…
https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280144168691
Interesting that for $200 it comes with a 16GB card with the reader. I’ll wager it doesn’t work with the EX1, but geez, how nice would THAT be? Would be nice to see Sony and SanDisk get some competition.

April 7, 2008 at 2:53 pmThis is the one i bought:
https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280214891057I read somewhere, might have been here, that there are two types of Expresscard readers, those with USB only channel and those with full Expresscard channel. The Sony reader has full support, mine has only USB support. I am pretty familiar with PC tech but this makes little sense to me.
