July 7, 2011 at 12:10 am in reply to: Wanted: AJA Kona Drivers for Avid Media ComposerThis is great news, Nick! Thanks for sharing. The Io Express is an amazing little box, but alas, cannot supply the kind of i/o we have with our Kona hardware. But I know it will work amazingly well for many others.
I wasn’t sure or not if it was public knowledge that Avid hardware is basically AJA hardware. It makes sense that Avid uses AJA hardware for their i/o hardware… nothing but the best. The integration of Kona only makes the best of sense to me. Hopefully that is what you mean by, “looking forward to expanded collaboration with Avid in the near future.”
Thanks for the reply, Nick. Much appreciated. =)
(And don’t get any wise ideas… we’re not going to the beach, dude)

Last Wednesday I got a response from Avid on Twitter about AJA Kona 3 support with a positive response… the first I had seen in a public venue. I was so excited I blogged the tweet thread:
https://www.onerivermedia.com/blog/?p=346
The next day they released this:
They’re listening and recognizing the people’s needs. I’m amazed really… this is a far different Avid than the company I loathed 15 years ago and up just about through to the first decade of the 21st century. First I thank Apple for that, then Adobe.
And Media Composer 6 will be 64-bit, confirmed by Avid on one of their forums.

At NAB I received a few inner twinklings of Kona 3 drivers working with Avid MC for a summer release, but alas, nothing written in blood, so who knows. It would be very unwise for Avid not to do it. And as mentioned in this thread, they already did it with ProTools HD (which we use), so it’s nothing all that new for them. In the interim, we’ll either use an AJA Io Express or the Matrox Mini. But if that lags too long, we’ll probably have to switch to Premiere to use with Kona 3 because Nitris may end up being too costly for my facility. Would really like to stick with Avid MC if we can though.

June 29, 2011 at 3:02 am in reply to: Is the blindness that Apple showed in the FCPX release a portent of Apple’s future?Apple certainly does not care about the professional market. They’ve bought and EOL’ed so many pro apps it’s laughable. I’d actually laugh, but those EOLs directly effect me and my business. Shake, Color, Cinema Tools, DVD Studio Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Final Cut Server, and a little app called Final Cut Pro versions 1 through 7 to name a few. At this point, I’m more worried about MacPros hitting the chopping block, because the pro apps are definitely at the end of the line.
More here: https://www.onerivermedia.com/blog/?p=322
Again, Apple doesn’t care about the pro market, nor will their loss of owning it kill their profit margin, and definitely will not spell out their demise. They have enough iProducts in the world to keep them running for a very long time.
