I think my troubles started when upgrading QT. To capture, I suspect you need the Pro version of QT. I probably upgraded to latest revision, but dropped out of Pro in doing so. Once I loaded up FCS2, pro was restored. I am using the ProRes422 codec and capturing is working fine. I will try capturing in a different mode and let you know.

Another possibility: the TIMECODE DURATION FIELD (top left of your canvas) may be longer than your content. Changing the duration (between IN and OUT points), automatically adjusts the sequence OUT point. Good Luck.

    Have you updated QT recently?
What are your FCP, OSX and QT revisions?

I updated QT to satisfy an iTunes update to satisfy and iPhone update and then was “unable to locate the following external devices”. (It is my only MAC)
I hit continue to finish launching FCP. When in Log and Capture, I would get the same “Unable to initialize …….blah blah blah” messages when changing settings.

Mine stopped working all together. Maybe yours is half dead due to different camera or different application versions.

Jon Chappell at DigitalRebellion started assembling a compatible versions reference.

You can search “Unable to locate the following external devices” for all the other things I tried before going out to purchase FCS2. I have not installed it yet. I need to follow David’s advice and get some hard drive / version management solutions in place first.

    Good luck.

    Robbie,

I had this problem once and recall doing a “Click and Drag” from the top of the timeline to the bottom (spanning all tracks and from the end of my intended content to the end of the timeline. I never saw anything selected but pressed DELETE anyway. Problem went away. Maybe something was present I could not see or maybe it forces a clean up of data behind the scene.

    Good luck.

    Hi David,

Such a disposable society that things become legacy and obsolete is such a short time. Even our buildings here are so short-lived. We tear them down and build new ones all the time. Seems so wasteful (lacks eco-friendliness too). Quite the contrast with many parts of Europe and the rich history of it’s cities and architecture. They were built to last. It is all about where you place value.

I would like to think that updates to QT would not compromise FCS workflows. Given the cost of FCS, I don’t think this is totally unreasonable. I did my part to help the economy this afternoon and purchased FCS2. I will read reviews and follow up on your CCC advice before installing.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Both cameras worked great with FCS. I believe my mistake was upgrading QT to support iTunes. I dropped some bucks on FCS2 this afternoon. Hope it gets the hole in my workflow filled. Thx, Tom

After reading many sources, it appears there are other apps depending on QT that downgrading QT will interfere with. Jon Chappell published a revision guide for FCP/OSX/QT back in January. Only a couple revisions out of date at this point.

If we were to add a column for iTunes (or other apps), we might find we have to choose between apps to keep functional.

This seems like a huge mistake releasing a QT revision that shuts down workflow on a major (and expensive) application like FCP. This is PC nonsense. I chose Apple/MAC to avoid these type of issues. I need a stable platform.

How long does it take Apple or the QT developers to develop a fix for bugs. Is this something they would be jumping on immediately? Maybe I need to upgrade to FCS2.

    Mildly frustrated! 😉

    How does one uninstall QT?
For certain version there are Re-Installers but not for QT 7.5.5.

    Thanks for helping. Tom

Something must have been present after the end of the timeline.
Extra frames in QT .mov file are gone after doing drag – drop – delete.

    Thanks for the response.

I drug the mouse from the top of the Video channel to the bottom of the last audio channel for a few minutes after the last image and nothing appeared selected that was hidden. I pressed delete anyway and still nothing.

Using the down arrow to jump from one clip end to the next, it stops at last frame of content.

There does not appear to be any content causing the extra frames to be exported.

I dropped the Motion clip and ended on a JPG still and same result with either content type.
