I have MPEG Streamclip…I’ll give it a shot!

I hear ya, Noah. I’ve been holding out for the new Mac Pro update, especially if it has Thunderbolt ports as the rumor mill says. Many years ago when I bought my current G5 PowerPC, literally a month later they released their first Intel chip machine. I don’t wanna make that mistake again 😉

Yes, I’m anticipating buying an Intel machine in the coming months. But until then, is there a way to downgrade the footage to an SD format (like Quicktime) so that I can edit it on a PowerPC, or are there no apps that do that?

That’s an impressive short! Loved the contrasting music. And judging from your behind-the-scenes video it looks like you got a lot of bang for your buck: did you shoot in your house with bedsheets for “green” screens? My only criticisms are that it tended to get too dark in shots, and I felt like older actors would’ve made it seem more legit. Otherwise, very cool.

Some questions for you…I’m looking towards moving into the DSLR realm. Any issues during your shoot? What kind of Nikon lenses did you use? Any reason not to use Canon kit lenses?

Regarding AE, how did you matte out the backgrounds without a real green screen? And how did you create those awesome hologram displays? Did you hand-draw those in photoshop and animate them in AE or were they some sort of plug in?

    Great job!

Shane, thanks for the info. A new computer is in the cards…eventually.

I’m testing the waters of HD and you brought up a great point. What is the difference btw all the different “1080” cameras on the market, from the cheap handicams to the HVX200 to the DSLRs to the Red? Is it just varying types of compression?

Also, if one were to edit Alexa footage with Apple ProRes, is it possible to “reassemble” the cut uncompressed at a later date or are you stuck with the ProRes compression? i.e. can I edit the cut at home (with an Intel machine) and possibly later have it cut together by a post house (uncompressed)?

    Thanks for your patience!

“Full HD Resolution” means 1,920 horizontal pixels and 1,080 vertical pixels, as opposed Extra-HD resolutions of 3K, 4K, 5K. Check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_video for a rudimentary primer on hd video if you need more info.

And thanks for the clarification on the ProRes codec. I had a bad feeling about that…

Thanks, Dave. The article on preview methods was very helpful. But despite trying different settings, the problem remains. I guess I’ll have to live with it for now. Unlike most After Effects applications, it’s tough to evaluate any “speed” or “timewarp” effects without proper playback.
