Just because a program is bundled with other software does not mean you have to use them together. Basically you can edit on whatever editing system you want, encode to mpeg2 with whatever encoder you want , and author with any authoring system you want. The only limitation is some authoring systems will be picky as to the file extension of the mpeg 2 file.
the bundles do work well together but if you are not impressed with the way DVDlab looks check out Sonic Scenarist or Creator, both are spec level tools (Expensive at that) and the interfaces are nothing like DVDSP or Encore.
I dont think DVDlab is a bad program, try the demo and go through a couple tutorials for it.

Our Premastering system is Windows based as well. Macdrive (www.mediafour.com) is the key to reading the Apple formatted hard drives on a Windows based PC. I’m surprised your replicator does not have this software.

I feel your pain! I was working on a project in Scenarist and went to delete a track that was no longer being used in the Scenario and POOF!!! all my tracks were gone! All I had left were the containers in the Scenario. Lucky for me there is NO undo so I had to recreate every track over again and place them back in the containers. To test again I went into an older project and went to delete just one track and yep it deleted all of them.
Sorry I have no input as to help but wanted to let you know that Scenarist (still is my favorite app to author with) is also the buggiest POS ever made.

EDVD is not at all compatible with Vista. I think this is mainly due to the fact that Interactual is not Vista compatible. I found this out a month after I did a project for a client. It got replicated for 10000 DVDs.
Not a big fan of Sonic.

The DVD-ROM/DVD-Video/CD-ROM protection only works from an actual Replicated Disc. Part of the protection is applied during premastering. I know of one company that does CD-R copy protection (I think they are in the works for DVD)and that is Hexalock. Hexalock requires special CD-RX media to record to.
Only problem I have found with any copy protection is even though the program/installer (EXE) cannot be copied, any or all of PDF, DOC, JPG, etc. can be copied.

Very inexpensive. Plus I have not seen anything that can crack it. However nowadays most copy protection is more to keep the everyday user from copying.
