ah, the joys of the digital age.
simple answer NO.
other than the sony broadcast lcd range, that run into big bikkies, there isn’t a hope in hell of matching 2 different lcd’s – it’s hard enough matching two identical lcd’s from the same manufacturer.
i simply continue using my sony crt as a ‘guide’. if it looks good on it, well, in my experience, it’ll look good on any lcd / plasma – with the exception of those ‘tuned’ by their owners for that ‘technicolour look’.

i think rick has said about all there is to say and quite fairly.
i am an editor of 30+ years and have used them all at some stage or another. they all have their good points (avids is certainly media management), and their bad. for me it’s been vegas since 4, and everytime i have to do a job on anything else, i really wonder why i bother. for me vegas is what i want from an editor – sophisticated simplicity. i know others who think i know fa about what’s a good nle. then again, none of them have ever edited seriously with vegas. i have with fcp, avid, premiere.

think you mightr have got the wrong end of my stick, or (as my wife is apt to point out) i didn’t make myself too clear:
a. if they have mainly video content with intro slides, then i simply edit the lot together (replacing their text slides) in vegas and export (embed) finished video in power point wrapper!
b. if they have a complete slide show with a bit of video, that’s another matter – i either export pp to jpg and work in vegas, or if they’re really proud of their crappy effects (and oh how proud the average mba can get with his fly-in text), i simply shoot the presentation off screen – adding a moving media generated boarder when necessary to fill the frame.
mind you, i haven’t had to do either fotr a long time thank goodness….

another in agreement with rob….
though the last time i was ‘forced’ to present video in powerpoint i simply did a whizz-bang edit in vegas, then embedded it in pp.
the amount of people asking em how i did such and such in pp was quite amazing!!!
told ’em it was a trade secret – blood mba’s in marketing!

and another thought would be to ask, what they (the group) actually want out of the nle? i know having used almost every other nle (with the exception of edius), that vegas is extremely quick, and (as long as you’re fresh to nle) extremely intuitive to use / pick-up.
on the whole i think the idea of a comparison is pretty meaningless without a road map.
it’s rather like asking which is better; a ford suv or a toyota landcruiser? they’ll both get you from a to b, but without knowing what lies between a and b…….
i would suggest that the group set’s a series of tasks, and then assess the outcome…
and of course, as rob points out, the pc’s should be equally powered, and the operators equally knowledgeable about their software.

on a 6600 with 3gb ram i get realtime preview hd, and literally no problems.
download the trial – other than protype, it’s pretty much the same outwardly as 7.
8a is MUCH better for hd than 7

apparently there’s cracked versions floating around of v8, and though they ‘work’, you don’t get fxs, and a lot of other stuff is screwed up….
i read somewhere that sony ‘bought out’ ssg, the crackers who unlocked 7, et al.
then again, it’s much easier to try the trial version for a month, then decide if it’s worth the investment – and considering the sp offer upgrade, i can’t see what you’re waiting for….
