I a newbie and wondered the same thing recently and here’s what I discovered, after lots of searching:
1. (optional) Use Dvdshrink to rip, but choose “Re-author” mode. I think you need to drag the video track to the left pane (You’ll figure it out). Then there is a small button to set start/endframes (with the arrows), so only the timeframe you want to use will be ripped. Click “Backup” and finish. This will create the new dvd rip Video_TS folder, but it will only be the short clip you selected.
2. There is a freeware program called VOB2MPG. It will convert dvd vob folder into an mpg file, and it is lossless because vob’s are just a form of mpg (from my limited newbie understanding). It also allows you to choose what audio track to use in the new mpg file.
Here’s the link:

(If you ripped the whole dvd instead of just the clip, you may want to buy the pro version of VOB2MPG, which can convert only selected dvd chapters to mpg, so you don’t have a huge mpg file in the end.)
3. Use the new mpg in your video editing software
Hope this helps
