Hi all. I do a lot of stuff with audio (SoundForge and Acid) but am really a novice with video.

What I want to do is quite simple but I have never been able to figure this out: I want to simply rip a dvd to my drive so that I can keep a quick 30 second clip of the movie.

I know how to backup/copy dvds to VOB files (and later burn to dvd)…I have been doing it for years with DVDFab and/or DVDShrink and Nero to burn. What I cannot figure out is how to import/open a VOB file into a video editor so I can just trim down to 30 seconds and later export that clip to MPG or AVI.

I downloaded the free trial of Vegas 10 and found that the only way I can get it to open/import a VOB file is to drag and drop the VOB into Vegas. After a few seconds of building the peaks, Vegas seems to show the VOB just fine…but it’s not…it doesn’t play the vocal audio track…it only plays the soundtrack of the movie (all the non-human talking). I’ve tried to figure out how to select the correct Stream but I just can’t get it to play the entire audio portion of the movie.

I’m on Windows 7 with Vegas 10 trial. If it’s not going to work with Vegas, maybe you can propose a much simple/easier/free program that will do what I want…afterall, people upload bazillions of short movie clips to Youtube and other sites every day…so someone knows how to do this. 🙂 And for the record, I own these movies and am not going to be posting the clips…just my own personal fun project.

If VOB files are too much of a pain to edit/cut, then what and how should I convert my VOB files to? There are hundreds of Codecs and applications so please be gentle and be specific. 🙂

Try File | Import | DVD Camcorder Disc… and point to your DVD. That should hopefully bring in the audio correctly.

Hi…thanks for the fast reply. A few questions since I’m not at the Win7 machine right now:

1)Point Vegas directly to my dvd drive…or point it to the directory of VOB/IFO/BUP etc files?

2)If I am to point it to the dvd drive, are you stating that Vegas will import the movie even though it’s copyrighted/protected? Does Vegas actually import/rip it at 1x or something faster like 8x that my drive can easily handle? I’d sure hate to have to wait 1.5 hours for it to import a dvd just so I can trim/create a 30second clip. 🙂

    Thanks again in advance!

It needs to be a DVD structure. If you have a \VIDEO_TS folder already on your hard drive, you can point Vegas to the folder above that.

Vegas will not copy a copyprotected DVD. It must either not have copyprotection or you must get it onto your hard drive some other way. It will process the files as fast as your computer can read and write them.

Hi. Well, I tried the dvd rip and it creates 29 MPG which play just fine in Windows Media Player…

I’ve spent about 45 minutes fiddling with Vegas and every bleeping time I CANNOT get it to play the human vocal tracks. The only one the plays the vocal is MPG 0…1-29 do not have it.

I’ve tried setting the properties of the project to 5.1 surround and no effect. Here is a screenshot of my problem…any ideas?

This seems waaaaaay too much of a hassle with Vegas…I’m very surprised Vegas is far more difficult to use than Acid…and I’ve been using Acid since 1.0.

In all fairness to Vegas, it is NOT a tool for importing Hollywood DVD’s nor would I want Sony to spend any time figuring out why it can’t import a Hollywood DVD. You should use other tools for that and produce a file with just the video and audio you want, then bring that file into Vegas.

    Hi John,

But you’re missing my point. My point is that I want to simply edit VOB files and then render them. I came to this board looking for advice.

Sure, maybe Sony isn’t the way to go to edit VOB files…that’s what it seems. But it is a commercial package that I would like to own for other, edits such as editing my MPG files that come off my Flip video camera…or import raw footage off my Sony miniDV camcorder.

I totally agree with you that Sony likely isn’t the way to load up a dvd and import it.

But back to my original question, then…what software (free would be nice) will allow me to simply edit VOB files and render my final piece into something else? Maybe this question’s answer needs to be broken down…as a video editing newbie, I’m looking for a simple answer like:

“Fred, it’s very hard to edit VOBs directly. Download _______ which will easily convert VOBs to _____ format…this program is designed for newbies and is extremely easy to use. Lastly, once _____ converts them to _____, use ______ which is a simple editing tool to make those 30 second clips you talk about”

    🙂

Can anyone help me on this?

    Thanks again in advance.

I a newbie and wondered the same thing recently and here’s what I discovered, after lots of searching:

    1. (optional) Use Dvdshrink to rip, but choose “Re-author” mode. I think you need to drag the video track to the left pane (You’ll figure it out). Then there is a small button to set start/endframes (with the arrows), so only the timeframe you want to use will be ripped. Click “Backup” and finish. This will create the new dvd rip Video_TS folder, but it will only be the short clip you selected.

    2. There is a freeware program called VOB2MPG. It will convert dvd vob folder into an mpg file, and it is lossless because vob’s are just a form of mpg (from my limited newbie understanding). It also allows you to choose what audio track to use in the new mpg file.

    Here’s the link:
    https://www.svcd2dvd.com/VOB2MPG/default.aspx

(If you ripped the whole dvd instead of just the clip, you may want to buy the pro version of VOB2MPG, which can convert only selected dvd chapters to mpg, so you don’t have a huge mpg file in the end.)

    3. Use the new mpg in your video editing software

    Hope this helps
