The PIPs are to simulate a video feed to a submarine. Video is placed inside an industrial looking monitor graphic and I want the reception to appear a bit dodgy at points. Working with the various noise and distortion effects in AE seemed a better choice.

While I would still like to understand the offline behavior previously described, I decided to render the individual PIPs as lossless with alpha from AE then drop then into Premiere. Workflow now looks like:

    1) choose the subclip in Premiere and choose ‘replace with AE comp’
    2) create the composition in AE
    3) render to lossless avi with alpha
    4) import avi into Premiere

The PIP footage isn’t very long (< 30 seconds) so render time is minimal.

  • It sounds like you would do well to seek out someone local to you that knows how to configure systems and let them worry about the details.

  • If you really want to go with a RAID config then a few more drives should be added to the system. a RAID array probably isn’t the best choice with only 3 drives.

Whether you run 3 individual drives or add a few drives to make RAID possible, the following should result in good disk performance.

C: = OS and Programs. Single fast drive or a pair of drives in R0
D: = Media and project. Single fast drive or 4 drives in R5 (5+ drives for R6)
E: = Previews, temp, etc. Single fast drive or 2+ drives in R0.
