I solved the problem my problem by exporting the project to AE and rendering it there.
I was trying to render the file as either an uncompressed or using the Animation codec Quicktime file at 740×480, 29.97 fps. I also tried some other versions, but no matter what I did it seemed to ignore my settings and go to one of the streaming presets.

Sorry, I meant that I have Premier Pro 2.0 – and the Encoder that comes along with it.

The first camera that worked on the Mac but not on the PC is a Sony DCR-PC300. The one that does work on both systems is a Sony DCR-TRV9. Not sure what the difference is. If anyone has any thoughts on this I’d liked to hear them.

I switched to different DV camera and the video preview seems to be working fine. I’m not sure why, as the first camera works no problem with the Mac. Thanks everyone for your trouble shooting tips.

This is exactly how I have it working on my Mac with AE7 – I switched the firewire connection from the DV camera over to the PC and it won’t mirror on the monitor. All the settings are correct under Video Preview.

Yes, thanks I had seen that and had gone through it thoroughly. But then I looked again and followed a link to another document (https://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/327652.html)which has hidden in it the following:
“Note: OHCI-compliant IEEE 1394 cards and iLink ports don’t support the After Effects video preview feature.”
I was using a MiniDV camera with iLink. I guess I’ll have to borrow some other camera and see if that solves the problem. Perhaps it would be not too expensive to my some other internal card for the PC that will do an NTSC out? Any thoughts on this would be very much appreciated.

This conversation has been extremely enlightening. I would rather stick with the Mac platform because it is the one that I am familiar with. However, I really need a new machine but don’t have a lot of money at the moment. I was wondering if I spent about $1,000 on a PC I could get something comparable to Dual Core Mac for AE. I would stick with my old G4 for everyday stuff, and just use the PC for AE (the program seems pretty much the same on both platforms). Again I’m a real neophyte when it comes to PC’s, and if anyone could suggest what I could get for less than $1,500 I would really be grateful.

I am also looking to upgrade but think it is a bad time to buy a new Mac. I really no nothing about PC’s – could someone estimate how much a PC comprable to the Mac Quad cost and where I might get it?

I am trying this on a large G5 network at school. I again am having the same problems. The render begins on the inital machine, but the other machines can’t seem to find the Watch Folder. One of them did temporarily but then gave an error in the HTM page:
1) “Render Failed on this Machine.”
2) “The following layer dependencies are missing: Text Layer: Font family: ‘Arial’, Font Style: ‘Black'”The second one is especially confusing as I am not using any fonts in this comp. I had lots of trouble setting up a render farm and am ready to give up. Is it this difficult, or am I missing something?

Also in the OpenGl Information it says Antialiasing & Motion Blur are not supported. This seems to agree with what I thought Adobe was saying on their video card page – that these two functions are not supported in OS X.
