This was the issue. I had a trial version of Bias “Soap.” It seems like when it expired it – somehow – disabled typing functions in FCP. Once, I removed the program everything worked fine.
I have had very few issues with FCP – and I have been editing with FCP since version 1. This was the strangest issues i have ever had. thanks to all for your help.
