Thanks, everybody. The cycore clue was the one I needed. I did a search and discovered that I had removed the whole folder (along with a bunch of bad BCC plugs) a few weeks ago. I simply grabbed the whole cycore fx folder and put it into the AE plugs folder. Problem solved. Thanks again.

That’s where I got it. I’ve got 14 gigs of ram. After I catch my breath and balance my books I’ll get another set of four and dispense with the original 2 gigs.

I really don’t see how things could go any faster, though. I’ve checked and double checked, and here’s the results of a recent (accidental) test.

I’ve got a comp I wanted to make changes to. It has several nested comps, all 3d, and a ton of effects, both in the nested comps and in the parent comp. I just rendered it out on the 8-core (to a couple of striped SATA II 10,000 drives) in 2 seconds. Two seconds.

I glanced at the render queue and the last time I rendered this same piece I did it on the g5 dual 2.5 and it took 20 minutes!!! Twenty minutes.

Now, I must have been doing something wrong before for such a marked difference.
This new machine has no added apps. It has AE CS3, FCP, and Photoshop.

My head is spinning. I’m in LOVE with this computer and with 8.0.2.

    July 26, 2008 at 2:03 am in reply to: 8.0.2 Won’t Install

Okay. I see others have had this problem.
This is what worked for me.
I uninstalled CS3 and got rid of all traces of it.
Easy to do since there was nothing but system files and Apple apps on the new mac pro.
    Then I installed it again.
BUT I DIDN’T OPEN IT. I really think that was what changed everything.
I went to the Adobe downloads and downloaded 8.0.2.
    This time it installed.
    Then I opened it.
    Everything worked.
It knew I had 8 cores when I went to the multi processing pref.
It knew I had open GL when I went to the previews pref. (we’ll see how that works).
    I’m happy. Tra la.

thanks, all. I really appreciate the help. I’m going to return the velociraptor. It all seems too problematic. I’ll exchange it for something a little more practical. And I’ll 0 stripe the two 150’s for working on media (always backing everything up to another drive.) Thanks again. L.

Oh, thanks Ron. I was going to get a tech guy I know to install it, but now you’ve got me scared. What I’ll do is wait and see what he thinks. And I definitely won’t try to use this drive as a boot drive. Thanks so much. Worst case, maybe I’ll send the drive back. Hate to.

Found at the Apple board: install velociraptor using heatsink from:

    https://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index.cfm?fuseaction=Product.display&product_id=180

it costs 48$ and when I talked to the guy (local for me, California), he said “you’ll need a torx #8 (get it at home depot) to remove the black bracket from the velociraptor.

I still want to know, Kevin. Would I be wasting this drive as a boot drive, when I could be using it’s speed for rendering media?

Holy moley! Okay. So, supposing I get some kind of way to install this drive. What I want is to run AE as fast as possible. So, boot drive or media drive?
At 750 gigs, theoretically, I could do both (as I do now, on my dual 2.5).

AND I noticed that elsewhere you mentioned using additional controller cards for additional sata II drives. Do I need an additional controller card? I’ve noticed that Sonet makes a four port for internal drives. With the usual temptation of “blinding speed.”

Thanks for all the info here on this type of stuff. L.

  • Okay.
First Thanks for putting me in my place. I was getting a little uppity. Good to know about Nucleo Pro.

Now. I’ve been on this board and on Adobe’s board trying to find out which video card to use. (I’m spending a lot of money on the mac pro, and I want to spend wisely.)

I got a lot of confusing info. The guys below said open gl in AE on mac is a dream, and forget about it.* But Adobe’s website says that open gl is now available for mac, using certain graphics cards.

    This was very confusing.

So I finally thought I was talking to the horse’s mouth when I reached this techie at Adobe who talks all day to mac users who have problems with ae.

I quoted what he said, here, and you guys talk down to me and fist bump each other, when all I’ve been doing is asking for help and then ignorantly quoting an Adobe rep.
    I thought he must know.
    What a dummy I was.

He would at least talk to me — because by the way, when I tried to contact Gridiron Software nobody responded to me, neither by phone nor email.

Anyway, Here’s what I got on this board: *And I quote:

Rumors abound that the next revs of Adobe products and Apple suites for the Intel Macs will be OS10.5-only and will finally take advantage of Leopard’s abilities to shift the Core Media handlers directly to the GPU.

Rumors only but Motion is the only product in the FC Studio to use the GPU muscle. FCP has to get around to it eventually.

OpenGL for AE has always been a dream. Maybe CS4 will make it real.

[Laurie Pepper] “Which is the best video card for 3d renders in AE on the new mac pro 8 core I’m about to buy.”

Good news! Any of the above. Take your pick.

AE doesn’t rely on hot video cards nearly as much as other apps. In fact, AE positively stinks when it tries to use Open GL. Everyone I know just forgets about Open GL in AE. In AE, a lot of memory is far, far more important.

I don’t know how knowledgeable these guys are compared to you two Steves but they’re kind. They’ve been kind to me. In my book that beats inventing Nucleo Pro. Or Nucleo. Whatever.
