Hi. I’m the original poster. I wasn’t working in PAL, and while I couldn’t figure out any way to fix my exisiting projects (where every clip in the timeline got renamed), I have figured out how to keep it from happening again.

In my case, there could have been 2 causes.

One, when I create new sequences, I now right click on the sequence and select “make sequence clips independent”.

Secondly, I had been working with footage I logged using markers, and I’d been putting the clips I made with markers into my timeline (which apparently is a no-no). Now, after I log my footage with markers, I create sub-clips (go to “Modify” and select “Create SubClip”) and I use the sub-clips instead.

Haven’t had any re-naming issues since. Hope this helps!

I looked in user settings, but not sure what I should look for?

It’s currently set (in “EDITING”) as:
Auto conform sequence “Ask” (vs Never or Always) &
“Always scale clips to sequence size” is checked (selected)
