Thank you Oliver, that is very reassuring.

I am very pleased to know that I should be able keep relocating files in this manner. I am fortunate that everything I’m relocating is well organized. Since the projects are saved in the same folder with their respective media it will make things much easier if I’m able to select a large number of folders at once.

In my tests I hadn’t run into any problems doing it this way, but I started to wonder “what if.” More likely than not these project files will not need to be opened again, but you just never know.

I’d like to be able to do a bit more than what a phone can provide, even though the quality is impressive, I am worried that showing up to an event with an iPhone to film will look like a lack of professionalism.

I have seen the MEVO! At first I was leaning towards that and I still see many benefits such as battery life with the add on accessory. However, user reviews that I’ve read have me questioning it.

Ideally I’d like to be able to use the cameras we have as well as our microphones. Recently I’ve started looking at the VidiU Pro by Teradek and I’m thinking that may be a really good solution. Do you have any thoughts on this product or type of product?

I like that I could just hook it up to our pre-existing camera, use our microphones (I think) and then monitor it on a smart phone or iPad. I also like like that you can stream to any platform and record to an SD card simultaneously.

Sorry to comment again, but I realized NLE was probably non-linear editing system? I don’t think the issue is the editing system. The problems occur even when just previewing the video on the computer before importing them to an editing system. I use Premiere Pro, I tried a variety of things in there to fix the issue, but it appears to be the video file. It’s just odd that it only happens when it’s saved in that way, so I know it’s not a camera issue. I don’t have Final Cut, but I did also try to import it to iMovie just to see if it it made a difference, which it did not unfortunately. I just don’t understand why saving it from the AVCHD Collection would cause an issue, but saving the .MTS files from the stream folder does not.

I feel silly asking, but what does NLE stand for?

Frequently we may record an event, save the video from the card and then use the card again, while previous events are still saved on the cards. If I save the entire card each time, I would end up with a lot of duplicate information and it would take much longer to save.

You think that the problem I’m having with the .mov files could be because I’m not saving the entire card and just saving the .mov files that I want? I’m doing the same thing with the .MTS files though and they are fine.

The money isn’t necessarily a problem, and I do apologize if I made it sound like I am looking for a work around to avoid cost, that is not the case. I was really just seeking information and a better understanding of how these things work, which you both provided so thank you again! I’ve just been needing to figure out the best way to acquire more space, and your shoe analogy helped with that. I need to talk to my boss and see if we’re going to hang on to the old shoes and buy a bigger closet, or if we can say goodbye to the old to make room for the new. I’m new to my role and my company and just didn’t want to haphazardly suggest we spend a large sum of money (even if it’s reasonable) on something without understanding if and why that’s the best solution.

Thank you Rainer! I had thought about a variation of this, but I do have one concern, but perhaps you might be able to speak to it. The issue (I think) for me would be relocating projects. Most of my work is done in premiere and if I relocate the premiere project and then later need to open it to reedit something, premiere won’t be able to find any of the original media, video clips, audio etc. because it will be looking for the original path where it was located and having to relink all of the files would be an impossible task.

A little more background info may be helpful. The arrays I have now are 12TB each with 9TB of usable storage with the configuration. I work for a university, so while I have many projects, most of them are relatively small in size. Filming a class, presentations, guest speakers, things of that sort. So no one thing is terribly large.

Just to make sure I understand one of your points correctly… you said I could buy larger drives and reraid my system, but that I will lose the media I currently own. Does that mean that if I take the current drives out, I can’t retrieve the data off of them by putting them back in if I desperately needed to? I understand that is not an ideal situation, but is it possible?

Hmmm, when you originally get to the .MTS files are you importing them from the “STREAM” folder?
