What codec is the footage? Vegas does really well with Sony codecs such as XDCAM – not so well with others. Make sure you leave the Preview window quality on Preview (Auto) while working – you’ll get decent quality preview in realtime. I switch it over to Best(Full) when I’m finishing and color timing but am usually parked on a frame and not playing most of the time so I can see full rez. Some faster graphics cards will speed up playback – check the Vegas site for list of qualified boards.

Thanks for the report Bill. Nice to see some positive stuff here, I too find the more I use FCPX the harder it is to go back to other NLE’s.

Well you’re better than me then. I haven’t cut a feature on Avid since early Adrenaline but we always worked in reels. The system back then couldn’t handle thousands of files in one project. Same on every feature I’ve ever cut or been involved with on FCP. The bigger the project, the slower opening and saving becomes.
Sony Vegas is the only NLE I’ve ever used that could have an entire 1,000 cut 1080p feature with 60 tracks of audio open at the same time.
Regardless if a system can handle more files or not, i still think it’s best to work in reels. Kind of industry standard in Hollywood features from what I’ve seen.

Yeah I cut my own stuff but concur – you’d have to leave the app and then activate the stuff you need to see. Though you could just activate whatever is on the schedule that day and hope your Director doesn’t want to quickly jump all over the place – though that is difficult in any NLE on a feature and projects are constantly being closed and opened.

I haven’t tried it yet but Philip Hodgetts Event Manager X might be a good solution. For instance if you’re working on a feature you could select only the sequences or reels you wanted to see in the Event Library, turning them on and off as you go. I plan on giving it a go if I end up using FCPX to cut my next feature.

Vegas is kind of it’s own beast and editing paradigm, much like FCPX while PPRo uses the industry standard Source/Record methods and manages media and projects in Bins. Vegas is explorer based so you can quickly pull in any media from drives and directories that you create right to the timeline or Trimmer. In Premiere you’ll import your media into a specific bin and then cut it in from there though there is a Media Browser for fast importing similar to Vegas. Vegas requires you to manage media well outside of the app, while PPro will let you take organizing media a bit further by setting up proper bins inside the app.
Once you get used to it you may like editing and organizing better in PPro. If you use a lot of audio in your work you’ll miss Vegas a lot, it’s just so fast and great at handling sound design, mixing etc. right in the NLE without the need to ever send sound out to another app. If you shoot with any flavor of Sony XDCAM gear Vegas is far better at handling the native footage and audio than any other NLE out there.
One big benefit you’ll have with Adobe is being cross-platform. If you decide to switch to a Mac you can while Vegas sadly is Windows only. Both are solid NLE’s that can be used well for virtually any type of show from news to feature films.
Finally yes you can export an .AAF of your project(must use 32bit Vegas for exporting .aaf) and import that into PPro.

Yeah make sure you have approved OpenCL graphics cards. I’m using ATI 5770 I picked up at Frys in a 2.1 MacPro (old) and it runs great. Card seems to be doing most of the work while editing.
Also re-wrapping XDCAM stuff to .mov goes pretty fast using the Sony software as a stand-alone app. I did a bunch of XDCAM 422 and it went very fast and runs great inside FCPX.

Yeah I tested it too – while the demo video is inspiring and the concept is uber cool – the results are not what I hoped for.
Tried IRUDIS Tonalizer which is a fantastic plug-in and seems very optimized for 64bit with great playback. Also bought Crumplepop’s Tonegrade which is cool but not near as good as Tonalizer.
