  • TKY Color Wheels (Free FCPX Effect) – Beta Version

A lot of people like being able to grade using traditional color wheels and also to be able to have the controls over the picture they are grading rather than having to look somewhere else.

This is (currently) a primary grading tool with onscreen controls for Low/Mid/High color (using large color wheels), incorporating rotational controls for Low/Mid/High luminance, and rotational control for Saturation.

I have made the color wheels very large as this is what I prefer (small color wheels mean having to make small adjustments that have large results, bigger wheels have better “gearing” and hopefully a more finely tuned result).

I have incorporated rotational controls for luminance into the centre of the 3 color wheels in order to save as much space as possible.

I have also made sure that the overlays are as unobtrusive as possible (they can be turned off completely once you know the interface). Note that they need to be turned off before rendering (unfortunately – I don’t yet know the way around this). Note that somewhat unavoidably the overlays do affect what you see in the scopes but the effect of this is small to start with and can be removed completely by turning them off.

This is a beta version which is fairly basic for the moment – adding secondaries should be fairly easy. As always the limitations of what you can do with the UI are a sticking point in terms of making it as elegant as it could be otherwise.

Nice start! I couldn’t get the overlays to turn off once I was happy with look. Color wheel would disappear but controls don’t. Also need a way to full reset.

    Thanks for the feedback, Lance.

Here’s a revised version with the ability to do a full reset on all values.

    3533_tkycolorv1.1.zip

Note that you can also now keyframe any value which is something that a lot of people seem to want to be able to do with their colour grading tools and which is currently not available in the Color Board.

I’ve also fixed the overlay not turning off. Of course if you want the controls themselves to disappear all you have to do is click off the current clip (as with all OSCs in FCPX). As always these do not render and do not need to be “turned off”.

Very nice! So now just tie in the free Wave iPad app for a control surface 😉

Thanks, Oliver. Nice idea about the Waves app … but then I’d have to go and buy myself an iPad as I must be the last remaining person on the planet who has resisted buying one!

Nice job Simon. I really like this a lot. Would there be a way of turning the color wheels on/off and also turning the effect on/off (for A/B comparison) in the viewer? Then everything could be done right in the viewer other than keyframing. Thanks for another great upgrade to FCPX!

    Thanks, Nick.

Good suggestion re: having those controls available onscreen.

The only trade-off would be extra oncsreen control “clutter” so I’m still trying to think of the least inelegant way of adding this and still leaving room for a few more bits and pieces that I think it could probably do with in terms of grading functionality, not least secondary capability.
