I agree audio editing needs improvement. Maybe they’ll update Logic to work hand in hand with FCPX? I wouldn’t mind round tripping if it’s solid and painless.

Yes the new iMac looks beyond tempting – looks like a real winner. Of course I’m sure once you build out a 27″ with everything for “pro” use it will quickly jump to $3500 range or more.

As far as 10.06 – I think it’s finally ready for some real work. I have a movie trailer to cut and we were gonna go with Vegas 12 to run the new version through its paces, but after playing with 10.06 I think we’ll go Mac on this one and see how we like FCPX.

Concur Dave – based on Dominic’s “wants” list – Vegas would meet just about every need except multiple source windows – but I use the Trimmer window in Vegas and never miss a Source window – and I cut narrative work all the time.

That’s not to say Vegas doesn’t have its quirks and problems – no NLE is perfect – but since I always Sound Design as I cut I have found no other NLE to match Vegas in it’s massive array of tools and workflows. It truly offers Pro Tools quality sound editing and mixing along with everything I need to cut picture. Now if Sony can just improve the built-in color tools…

Yes it should run under Bootcamp. GPU acceleration is still a bit spotty but 12 looks pretty good so far – just finished an editing/sound design and mix job for a major studio promo this week and it worked very well. This is the main reason I’ve kept Vegas around for over a decade – it’s still the only NLE that let’s me cut picture and has Pro Tools quality audio editing and mixing as I cut…

Have you tried rendering with GPU support turned off? I had same problem but rendering worked fine once I turned off GPU. I’m using a GTX 570 by the way.

Yes stability with Vegas still an issue though better with 12 – that’s why I’m curious if a fresh build for OSX may perform better than PC version…

By the way Vegas 12 has FCPX exporting! and it actually works! Plus FCP 7, Avid, Premiere and AE exporting! Not to mention the first NLE to support the Motion Picture Academy’s new ACES color workflow for digital cinema and other workflows as well as true RAW colorspace for F3 users.

SoundForge has a different use than the multi-track editors you have mentioned. It’s strength is in audio clean-up and repair and it is the gold-standard for mastering/finishing audio and CD prep. SoundForge is a tool you would have in addition to your favorite audio editor.

I’m hoping we’re going to see Vegas on the Mac soon too – that would be a real game changer as Vegas 12 has more flexibility and pro features than any other current NLE.

I’ve been one of those asking for Mac version of Vegas since I started beta testing their stuff over 10 years ago. Vegas and Sound Forge have been the 2 main reason I’ve always had a PC workstation around and couldn’t go Mac only…

Really lame analogy and mostly untrue. While you’re not adding resolution you are changing the bit depth of your file – this can make a positive difference when the transcode is happening in a program like 5DtoRGB or even better, using Dark Energy plug-in for After Effects to create an ultra clean master. A DSLR file that has been run through Dark Energy and exported using a high-end codec like Cineform or DNxHD 444 will give you radically better results especially when it comes time to color time your show – not convinced? Watch the Blu-ray of Act of Valor which is about 80% DSLR footge, was “cleaned up” using dark Energy and looks beautiful.
