Yeah and I didn’t ask since I was pestering them about FCPX and started to wear out my welcome… plus I’m very happy with my new iMac and not missing my MacPro at all not to mention the heat that used to fill my edit suite. I will pay for my iMac in 12 months with AC savings.

After looking at all the press photos and videos of 10 – it’s crazy how much it looks like FCPX – it really resembles the FCPX most of us would have preferred as far as having tracks and even the FCP legacy drag and drop into record window etc.

I totally agree that Apple is way too secretive in just about everything they do – but can’t argue with success…
As far as FCPX – after talking with the Apple guys at NAB, I get the feeling that they know it’s not done yet and are playing it extra close to the vest until the last of the missing features are back in. At least they were open enough to admit they know the issues and are working on them – won’t know until the next rev how close they’re getting…

One thing I’ll say after 4 days in the AJA booth and walking the show – of all the NLE companies at the show – Adobe seems to be the most aggressive, frank and open in it’s efforts to make their products better. They know they’ve been 90% there with Premiere for a while and are earnestly trying to get that last 10%., especially for FCP 7 users. The simple little things we used daily in FCP 7 like moving a clip up or down on the timeline etc are the things they’re trying to get right. I got to spend a little time with one of the Product Managers at my station Thursday and the “next” version really looks good. This doesn’t mean I’m ready to abandon FCPX but I will give it s fair shake on a paying gig and see.
While I’m a big fan of Resolve the big surprise for me was Speedgrade – the new version looks great and finally has hardware monitoring via all the AJA products. This is good news for AJA fans who were forced to buy Black Magic gear just for for Resolve. I spent 2 days at the AJA Speedgrade station with a Tangent Element controller and it’s very sweet – actually easier and faster than Resolve. Round-tripping from Premiere is still a work-in-progress and will only get better.

Thank for the sane post! Crop factor, 4K, Raw etc are just out of hand with the Vimeo camera demo crowd, most of whom were probably shooting DVX100 not long ago.
After watching the beautiful images in the Canon 4K theater at NAB it was amazing what folks who just go out there and do it getting out of everything from the 7D to C500 – crazy good stuff. I was really blown away by the C100 too – a camera I looked down my nose at before NAB.

Totally agree – I got a demo of the OSX version and it’s really looking solid – total parity across three different operating systems along with insanely low cost could be formidable in the near future.
One blogging team that stopped by AJA booth to shoot an interview mentioned that in all their meetings the feeling was that high-end pro’s were staying Avid, indie studios were going Premiere but the web producers and one-man-bands were going FCPX. The debate rages on…

Yeah I have a few hours off tomorrow before we close 🙁 and plan to hit the Adobe demos and Avid.
Oliver is right though – FCPX is actually alive and well in many booths throughout the show – we have it running on several pods in the AJA booth too – along with the new Adobe suite of course. But generally wherever you see some sort of Thunderbolt device running on a Mac FCPX is there…
As far as Thunderbolt goes though – amazing that this year HP and others are really selling Thunderbolt hard – but on PC’s – not Macs.

I haven’t had much of a chance to play with it yet at the show – we have the entire suite in all our stations at the AJA booth but it was crashing constantly on my pod Monday. Audio looks better – way nicer waveforms. Simpply being ably to move a clip up or down a track like FCP7 is tiny but huge in day to day editing… I’ll be testing out some more this afternoon when I get back to the booth.
I was on Speedgrade station all day yesterday with a Tangent Element control surface – it’s MUCH improved – now supports all AJA hardware – and fantastic when paired with Tangent and LOOKLABS pre-sets – I may be convinced to drop Resolve…

Seriously though – one of the most impressive demos of the day for me was Lightworks – the Assistant Editor/Editor workflow is more powerful than anything I’ve ever seen. Funky looking program but great for long form feature work.

The small cam just looks silly but I still want both of them – BMD is kinda doing what Red started out with the first Scarlet announcement. Now Red is charging 6 grand for a recording module…
