  • Sorry I meant “expand” not detach audio. It is a pain to have to do this for every single clip though the magnetic timeline is actually nice on a long form project making it almost impossible to knock things out of sync with picture…

  • I have used CS6 but find it lacking in some of the day to day edit tools I rely on in other NLE’s like moving a clip up or down, sync indicators etc. but it is fast with a CUDA card.

I realize my current show was not built correctly in X – an Event for every sequence makes it so slow – but there’s no way to media manage the timeline into a new project to speed things up! Also, having to break apart video and audio every time I want an overlap is tedious…

  • Well the CC folks have their own debate forum now so it’s back to FCPX debate – which for me is back on. I’m in the middle of finessing 2 indie features for a distributor – both are FCPX projects – both built from day one as a complete mess and both slower than any project I’ve ever done in any NLE and I’m using the uber iMac with 32GB of RAM.

I’m really ready for the new Premiere to be released and seriously thinking of never using FCPX again – while there are some cool features in X, there is still so much lacking for what I do which is longform narrative work. I think it’s best suited for 5min or less projects where a mess of “Events” won’t get in the way….

  • Yeah you’re gonna have strobe in the 29.97 footage for sure – pretty much any way you covert it including Twixtor. Oliver’s Teranex suggestion is probably best (also his firing the A cam gets my vote).

Have you tried setting up a 23.976 Avid project and bringing in the 29.97 footage as is into a sequence? The Avid can probably do as good a job as anything else at pulling it down?

Alt Plan: If you are on a PC, download Sony Vegas 12 – it’s a fully functioning 30 day trial (unless you have it). Set up a 1080p 23.976 project and place the 29.97 clips on the timeline (turn re-sampling OFF) and render out DNX 175 files at 23.976 – this will get you a decent version but there will still be some strobing but your audio will be fine. Vegas does this better than any other NLE out there.

  • I totally agree – even though 6 is much nicer than 5.5 it still lacks a lot of basic editing features like moving a clip up or down etc. The upcoming version has added so many of these day to day features and looks like the first NLE to truly match or better FCP7 in its usefulness assuming that it is relatively bug free and stable.

Not to mention none of us (unless you’re a beta tester) has really run the next version of Premiere – there’s a good chance, from what I’ve seen, that’s it’s a great NLE and a bargain!

Even though I don’t currently use Premiere for day to day editing I do need and use Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects regularly and would have no problem cutting in Premiere if it finally meets my needs. I think the last 5.5 to 6 upgrade for current users was $599 to 799 depending on when you purchased – by using the upgrade special I ended up paying $29 month since last August – far less than buying the boxed set.

Well for everyone bitching about $600 a year to use EVERY app Adobe has, I think we paid something like $2400 per year per Adrenaline and 2 or 3 times that for our DS just for support – which was really pretty poor at the time.

Complaining about having to pay $50 bucks a month for software is silly – if your billing just $50 per hour in your business you’ve paid for all your software needs the 1st hour of each month!

I still don’t have my head wrapped around it yet but the whole “rooms” thing is pretty cool – interface customization is more flexible than other NLE’s including having a space for each type of workflow exactly like you want whether picture editing, sound editing, etc.

Setting up a room for each sequence in a project and opening any of them any time – i.e you’re working on sequence 10 of a 50 sequence feature film and someone wants to see version 6 of sequence whatever – just pop open that room. Say you ask your assistant to cut in some b-roll or sound fx in a sequence – you can have that room open on your desktop and watch the assistant work while working on your own sequence – great for training an apprentice Editor. One thing I’ve found is it’s best to have matching monitors in a dual set-up – I have a 30″ Dell and 24″ Dreamcolor and it’s not great for desktop customization with Lightworks – dual 27″ would be ideal.

Other features like adding window burns for myriad of useful things like date, shot, timecode and even letterbox in a render are simple checkboxes – no filters/fx to add and adjust – just check the item you want and where on the picture you want it and it will be in your render.

Still a LOT to learn on my side – it’s not an NLE you can just pop open and figure out – you gotta watch the tutorials and read the manual or you’ll miss how powerful it really is. Almost everything from adding a dissolve to color timing to titles is different than any other NLE but it all starts to make sense the more I play with it.

What’s super enticing to me is the software itself – after seeing the demo at NAB on PC and limited Mac demo there are features that make total sense that don’t exist in ANY other NLE without using plug-ins, fx or 3rd party adds. There is a learning curve for sure but it looks worth it in the end. It really looks great for what I do and I plan on giving it a go with my PC on a paying gig real soon.

There is talk of a Lightworks Lifetime Membership – say $999 one-time fee gets you upgrades etc. for life.
