  • But you can only buy them with a monthly autoship subscription. What if I don’t use ’em all up before my next month? I hate subscriptions…

Bummer – I haven’t worked with raw Red footage yet and have tried to remain 100% Pro Res.

One thing I don’t like about importing is that FCPX will reject files, sometimes even if it is the original file! Many times I’d like to replace a file in the timeline with an updated file – say a shot from graphics or fx – and I want to replace the file no matter what – if it doesn’t match the frame-rate or codec or audio config etc it should be my choice to go ahead and replace/update and not FCPX!

I’m one of those that has gone back and forth several times on both PC and Mac platforms. While I was a long time FCP user I was also concurrently using Sony Vegas on a PC for most of the past decade. After using Premiere CC for the past year with overall positive results I’ve made the switch to FCPX and liking it a lot – some glaring weaknesses are key framing, lack of a simple way to replace a clip in the timeline i.e. Right-click “replace” and /or match-framing. But overall I like it.

If something better comes along like Resolve 12 or Vegas 14 on the PC I’ll happily check them out and give them a serious look.

  • That’s pretty impressive for sure – before Avid was de-listed they were showing total annual revenue of a little over $600million and that includes everything they make from audio hardware etc. So FCPX at $299 and Logic at $199 have a way larger user base than ANY other NLE including Adobe!

July 24, 2014 at 2:42 am in reply to: Premiere Pro CC versus FCP X

I’ve done every paying gig in Premiere CC since the June 2013 release including 2 feature films and 2 national TV specials. While I’ve dabbled in FCPX since the beginning it’s always been a pain. After the “CC 2014” release and the need to not only re-install the entire suite from scratch but also most of my plug-ins, same on both PC and Mac, and then having just terrible performance issues I decided to take a serious look at ANY/ALL other NLE’s again in an attempt to completely eliminate Adobe from my workflow – yes even Photoshop, AE and Illustrator. Other factors include of course the subscription and Premieres terrible audio tracks and audio in general – Audition didn’t cut it for me either.

After doing the entire 5.1 mix for a 30 min. doc recently I decided it was time to do a show from start to finish in FCPX. It’s just a 2 minute promo for a new game but it has quite a bit of compositing, 3D text and tons of sound fx. I almost gave up after a few days but once I got through some growing pains I actually really like the magnetic timeline. So nice to stack a bunch of sound fx and not worry about adding tracks etc. Also great to copy a bunch of sound effects and paste them anywhere without worrying about damaging something. Also audio mixing, fades outs, setting levels while playing, all are so much better than Premiere and the end result sounds far superior to sound from Premiere.

The only real drag with FCPX so far is key framing – just doing a simple move on a picture or graphic sucks due to the lack of interpolation features. I’d like to be able to right-click on a keyframe and change the interpolation – is this too much to ask?

How much RAM are you using? I have an 8core Mac Pro 4,1 with 16GB of memory and it seems FCPX just grabs it and hangs on until there’s none left. I’m using Memory Clean which helps as I don’t have to close FCPX for a while but during heavy lifting (cutting a promo with several layers of picture and sound) I have to restart about once an hour to keep things fast.

Thinking of 32GB memory upgrade to help until I get the new Mac Pro.

Concur! It seems easy to design an audio panel that included a “bus” for each role with an effects panel for each bus where you could apply plug-ins? And a Master bus where you could apply a compressor for CALM or whatever. I really wouldn’t miss a mixer as long as I had this additional control.

Yes latest version – stability is fine, just the resource hogging. I installed a new Sapphire 7950 just to give the system a little more GPU memory but didn’t solve the slow down problem after a lot of heavy lifting. Hopefully just a hardware thing I can find.

I’ve been a casual user since the beginning – very casual love/hate user – but now attempting full-time use! Also plan to cancel my CC at the end of the month. I still need Photoshop and AE here and there but fine using older versions. After a full year with Premiere CC used on a wide variety of paid gigs I’m done.

I even bought some new FCPX plug-ins this weekend 🙂

Only issue I still have with FCPX is that it just holds on to RAM so much that I need to restart machine almost every hour under heavy use…

  • I agree with everything here but not sure Apple would consider this since every feature you’re asking for is available in Logic for $199. I’ve been spoiled by over a decade of using Sony Vegas which has full DAW features along with full NLE features. I don’t own Logic yet but considering giving it a try for post audio as it apparently can take a FCPX xml – just haven’t heard from anyone using it on paying gigs.

BTW I just delivered my first full mix on a doc yesterday using nothing but FCPX and roles. 5.1 mix sounded great but I sure missed bussing my dialog, effects and music…
