  • I just tried voice isolation in Resolve 18.1 for the first time yesterday. Was really impressed. Had bugs in the background, and it removed them completely without touching the dialog.

I’m replying late on this, but just started doing 4K video with the iPhone. I 100% recommend Moment lens. I’ve been using their anamorphic lens, and it is SWEET. Plus, the Moment app is free, and allows you to lock in not just frame rate, but f-stop, white balance, etc. HUGE!

If you’re cutting on Avid, I just did a blog post on the steps covering moving the footage from phone into Media Composer. It took me a bit to sort it out, but the workflow words flawlessly.

You’re a wealth of information as usual, Michael.

I will read up on your blog to try and figure out the best workflow, as some of the stuff you just said was new to me. I jumped out of editing to write, and now that the script is done, I’m prepping ahead of time for post, but the last feature I cut, dailies came on DV-CAM from the lab. LOL. Man, this stuff changes fast.

    Thanks for your time!

Michael! It’s been awhile. Thanks for the link – I’ve saved that.

Man, I’m really trying to figure out the best workflow for 4K from a GoPro and the Black Magic card. We’re planning to shoot our first feature film (God willing) at Theater Eleven Pictures next year, and we’re shooting on the Black Magic, and of course, cutting on Avid.

If you have any other links and such that would rock. I’m on Avid subscription, so I can use any of the latest workflows. I’m also trying to figure out what hardware I’ll need to offline edit. I don’t want to finish, but I need to be able to take the files myself and make them ready for cutting. This is a low budget indie pic. I’ve been looking at the G-Speed stuff — that looks promising for storage.

    Good to hear from you.

Thanks man. Yeah, I’ve heard the latest updates from Avid will be including some extra stuff for cutting 2K and 4K natively.

I thought the GoPro allowed for shooting in some modes without distortion. Am I wrong on that? This is the Hero 4 Black.

    Anyone on this?

I’ve also noticed another bug in the latest FCPX: try and export a QT full rez video only. It will include the audio. Thanks Apple.

Update: for anyone who is thinking about purchasing Toast 11 – don’t. It is a complete waste of money and time. A DVD burn from Toast 11 is horrible. I’m taking the software back.

Guess I’ll go the Encore route. Thanks for everyone’s comments!

By unsupported I just mean I don’t want to install iLife 11 only to have Apple say next year that with the next OS version, iDVD from the old iLife isn’t compatible and will cause instability, etc.

I came from IT before film, and basically, I have a clear understanding of Murphy’s Law, and running software that isn’t being developed any more just isn’t the type of gamble I like to take.

If I was never going to upgrade my OS…well, maybe not that big of a deal. But Apple really pushes people to stay on current version of the operating system, or other things will not work like the latest FCPX updates….Compressor, who knows.

Thanks Bret – I don’t have the cash for Encore unfortunately. =(

I appreciate the feedback. Can’t believe there isn’t a cheaper DVD authoring solution. Yikes.
