The video already shows up as fully rendered with a green line over it in the timeline…yet the footage quality still drops 🙁 Anybody else have some advice?

July 29, 2010 at 4:27 am in reply to: MPEG Streamclip: NTSC or 16:9?

Thank you for your help. My sequence settings are set at 16:9 NTSC in FCP right now…so I guess I’ll just stick with converting it to NTSC and then checking the ‘anamorphic’ box. Maybe the playback problem is an issue with my computer’s speed?
    My stats are
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

Sometimes re-playing the footage does not produce the same glitchy results, but most of the time it does.

Also, I was thinking the problem might have had something to do with the DVD rip…maybe it was a bad one. Any ideas?

Once again man, thank you for all of your help with this issue.

Before I get started too far in my project, I was wondering, what should I switch my Sequence Settings in FCP to? My understanding of the sequence settings is that it changes the properties of your entire timeline…is this correct? For now, I have it set up the same way that you set up the settings in MPEG Streamclip (DV NTSC, 720×480, etc etc). Was this a good thing for me to do?

Wow man, thank you so much. It worked great! Flows smoothly in FCP now.

The quality is only VERY, VERY slightly changed, but I can live with it.
Since my goal is to get as CLOSE to the original DVD quality as possible, I’d like to ask you a couple more questions.

1). If I were to change the size of the video (here you told me to choose 720 x 480) to a larger size, such as 1920 x 1080, would the quality be better? Or does this size make it even harder to edit within FCP? I dont mind making the file sizes larger, I’m just worried about it being great quality and being editable.

2). In the screen capture that you sent, I noticed there was also an option for Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
Would this make a noticeable difference in quality? Or would it just take up a ton more file space and not make a difference?

Thank you so much for your advice, you’ve saved me!

Thanks for the advice. Could you tell me how I would go about ripping a DVD in Mpeg Streamclip? I’ve used it for converting video formats into something else, but never for ripping straight from a DVD.

Also, I would like to rip only a certain PART of the DVD rather than the whole thing to minimize the file size. Is this possible with Streamclip?

I’ll look into the Firewire thing, I’ve heard that advice before but right now I’m storing my media on a WD Smartbook 500 gig External HD and its using USB. It only has one connection in the back, but I’m not sure if its also firewire compatible. I’ll have to check that out.
