    You could go to Avid.com and download for free Avid Xpress DV editing software

    at: https://www.avid.com/register/xdv4_cpr.asp

    Then at least you’d be able to look at the footage – however I’m not sure whether this program allows you to export a project as a quicktime file and whether it is an easy import to FCP without Automatic Duck

    You could always learn a little Avid and finish the project with Xpress DV

    Ah – ha

    Is there a list out there where a novice editor can check which tape formats can be captured on which deck? Or perhaps better, which tapes cannot be captured in native format.

    You see I borrowed the DSR-11 but now I’ll probably have to rent another one.

    I’ve tried tweeking things that could be tweeked

    but it doesn’t seem to make a difference
