I tend to shoot in QT mode when I know that my takes will not exceed the 4GB file size limit and split the file. When shooting longer format I shoot in mp4. At this point it is just a wrapper. Either way you are using the XDCAM codec.

With the JVC software you can really stitch together multiple MP4 files and even files that span multiple cards into one long file (ie. you are doing a multiclip).

The QT wrapped files import right into the “capture bin” w/o any need of log and transfer.

Hope this helps and would love to hear others opinions.

Does this allow the use of AAC and AAD codecs as well as installing LAME?

I have noticed that the XDCAM EX codec is a bit noisy in the blacks. I have seen footage from other cameras with this same codec and it looks similar. A bit annoying but you may be able to minimize it with some setting changes.

On a side note, as I sit here and stare at the dock connector for the Ki Stor drive, it looks awfully like a Sata data/power connection. Anyone brave enough to give it a try?

I have not used it but is running it through the image processing in Final Cut (Motion) a possibility? I have a friend who really likes the results. Just a thought.

IMHO, if you want everything to match, you “dumb down” for you lowest quality camera. But the best as the wide shot (if you have a wide shot) because it will most likely be able to handle the higher frequencies (detail in the image) better than the lower quality cameras.

    just my 2 cents.

March 26, 2010 at 2:17 am in reply to: Importing clips from JVC 700u into FCP

If you are shooting short segments, best bet is to shoot .mov then you can bring the clips right into FCP. If you are shooting longer format and want to bring footage in as single clips, you can shoot in the .mp4 format and then bring them in through log and transfer.

If your footage spans multiple cards, use JVCs software that came with the camera to combine all of the .mp4 clips into a single file folder for log and transfer.

REMEMBER! NEVER play around with the file structure of a .mp4 folder. One simple mistake and you could render your footage either useless or a huge pain to recover.

Just as a off chance, try to reset Compressor. Go to Compressor. It doesn’t matter if you closed it or not. Click on “COMPRESSOR” in the menu bar. Drop down two and hit “Reset Background Processing”. Once a job starts, this is the only way to reload or reset it. Just closing Compressor doesn’t do the trick and the job will try to continue after a reboot.

    Just my two cents.

Do you have a good tape that has been previously recorded with known footage? If so, try to play it back in the camera and see if you are not having head clog issues. I have seen one case where the heads would get funky in pause but when the tape started moving over the surface, it would clear enough to lay down a little bit of signal. It wasn’t good but enough to make one scratch their head.

I have had some experience with some of the other Everio models. The ones we have for training use a Long GOP MPEG2 structure that saves as a .MOD file. We are able to open and convert these files to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) for post with MPEG Streamclip. If you can open it, you can most likely convert it to something usable. Don’t forget that MPEG Streamclip can also do batch jobs. So load up all of your clips and go make a sandwich.
