I remember when Vox covered you guys and your process when Stranger Things first popped off. It was an eye-opener!

I found this video on YT which serves as a near perfect example of the look that I want to achieve. Plus, the uploader put the entire workflow in the description, so I can tweak it to fit my specifications. Would you consider this a suitable digital alternative?

    Hi Andrew,

I have to say that your advice was dense but helpful to a youngun like me.

I just have two questions for you:

    1) How would I go about making sure my grain asset is static during each of my pulled-down frames? Is baking it in and the pulling down my footage the answer?

    2) How would I go about recording NTSC video of pure whiteness? Will the signal be intact if I record it off a CRT TV and transfer it to digitally made footage? Will it affect the dynamic range? Will it create color bleeding?

PS: if there are any industry veterans out there who know the process well, your input is greatly appreciated in advance

  • Hmm…what kind of text animations would you suggest?

It honestly sounds like a good idea, Tim! The question is how do I go about using it?

Also, the slit scan is nearing completion and I will have a detailed post on how I achieved the look with the original inspiration video featured in my first post so you can contrast and compare.

    Hey guys,

After VERY close study of this video, I think I managed to decipher how he made this effect. Basically, he pre-composed a 2d slit, turned into a 3D layer, copied+pasted it multiple times, and used the 3D Camera option with a wide angle lens (possibly a 24mm). I decided to apply this interpretation to my own work, which is currently nearing completion. When it’s done, I’ll post a new message with the finished product along with the video above so you can compare for yourselves.

Thanks for the advice, but I think that effect feels a bit too much like present day Dr. Who for my taste, especially since you have the option to move the vortex in different directions.

  • Sorry that this is VERY late, but would that simply entail scaling up the bit amount?

  • Thanks, I’m glad that we’re on the same page.

I mainly want to do my effects with PS layers because I don’t really know if you can desaturate CG in After Effects. If it’s possible, I’d really like to hear about it.
