January 15, 2008 at 3:29 pm in reply to: RED aspect ratio problem in FCP 5.x

    Hi Dave,

[Dave DiPinto] “Try changing the “Correct for Aspect Ratio” setting in the FCP Canvas window under the scale drop down. This should make RED look correct and FCP look slightly squished, but won’t affect output. You can change this when working in RED then revert for editing in FCP. “

Cool, that seems to work. Thanks!

[Dave DiPinto] “The project settings should always be grayed out in RED because those are dictated by the host. “

Sure, but why is the host (FCP) telling RED that the frame is “Custom Size” with “Square Pixels” when running normally, but if I do your work around above, it reports the frames size as “PAL D1 Widescreen” and aspect ratio as “16:9”? Shouldn’t FCP be always telling RED the correct frame size and aspect without needing the workaround?

Any ideas why this happened? It was running normally, (RED working as expected) then all of a sudden it just started with this problem.

    Thanks in anticipation

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for coming back to me.

Although it was engaged, switching of “Preview with Square Pixels” does nothing – even if you apply the effect and then re-edit.

A quick look at the project settings shows the pixel aspect selector greyed-out but set to square pixels.

    Any other suggestions?

January 15, 2008 at 10:47 am in reply to: the white stipe

    Hi John,

I have encountered something similar to this. The fact that you see it on some but not others, I think, is because different machines decide differently where the edge of frame is, some show the most extreme upper line, some crop it off.

The white line itself – if it is the issue I encounter – is actually on the footage. I have found that certain cameras, the PD150 for example, seem to add this line. It is most noticable on dark backgrounds. A strong red even gives a green line. Try shrinking the image to see it. It is only on one filed, so viewing it on a progressive screen like FCP’s canvans won’t show it.

When I make DVDs, I add a caption to ‘crop’ the top line off, replacing it with black. This also gets rid of the green line that Media 100 DV out adds, and the problems caused by the field dominance reversal inside Media 100 – but that’s another story.

Obviously, this might not be your problem, but try cropping the top line off with black anyway, to see if it helps.

January 11, 2008 at 2:59 pm in reply to: Best config for M100 and FCP on the same system?

    Hi Andy,

[Andy Taplin] “Is the best way to do this to install FCP on a separate drive with a separate operating system so it’s completely isolated from M100.”

Just FYI, you don’t need a separate drive, just a separate partition. On my system, to allow for the other internal bays to be a RAID system, I partitioned a 320GB drive into two 160Gb partitions. Like Floh I installed the software into one partition and then used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy this install to the other partition.

Booting with the alt key down allows you to choose the partition (or drive) to boot from (I named the partitions FCP & Media100 for obvious reasons!)

January 4, 2008 at 5:54 pm in reply to: external hard drive to work w/ Producer?

    Hi GSW,

[GSW video] “Feedback I got from my last cow posting said I shouldn’t be digitizing any media to my Macs internal drives even though they are different from my boot drive. They said they didn’t think the internal, serial ATA drives were fast enough.”

Really? I’ve Raided 3 of the 4 bays in my MacPro and use this exclusively for video. I’ve had no opportunity to give compressed HD a real-world test, but the numbers stack up and it was handling 10 bit uncompressed quite happily. You won’t get much luck digitising to the internal drive of the laptop, so you will still need a external there.

I would recommend the G-RAID FW800 500Gb. I was usuing this as a mobile RAID for several suites working in SD on 8.2.3. Some real time issues occasionally but overall, it worked well.

BUT. I don’t think the issue you are seeing is drive speed based. Media 100 will give you a specific error if it can’t stream the data of the discs quick enough. What you are seeing seems much more like a bug, probably to do with the drop-frame issue you mentioned.

December 27, 2007 at 12:36 am in reply to: Screen Capture?

    Hi Bob,

Have a look at iShowU from Shinywhitebox

    https://www.shinywhitebox.com/home/home.html

I use it to capture webpages being used, for use on my HDe. It can capture any screen area at any resolution and has presets for standard video codecs/rezes like DV and HD.

I tested several products before choosing this one, and felt that it gave the best results. YMMV so I would advise downloading the trial version first to see if it suits.

    Hi Paul,

[Paul Fechtmeister] “On the systems that have the audio effects menus I seem to only be able to select the equalizer and not others… is there a trick or are the dynamics options only available on the more expensive versions. “

Are you trying to apply a dynamics effect to synced clips? It won’t let you and will grey them out. The EQ and Reverb should work though.

One work around is to add a master audio clip to the bus and apply the dynamics to that.

[Paul Fechtmeister] “I suppose the XR is the only option, is this available for the LE and the LX? Also, we are running 8.2.1 how high.. if any.. can we upgrade?

The “tune up” works for any software version/level and brings it up to 8.2.3a (which is a free update for your 8.2.1 BTW) but brings XR (software) functionality.

    Hi Paul,

You get the Audio EQ and effects window by selecting it under the window menu. However, not all software levels had access to the audio FX – LE’s didn’t for example.

Which software level is the suite you are on?
