Hi Larry,
First of all, make sure you have the (free) software codecs installed on your Media 100i system – they can be downloaded from the Media 100 website under Media100i.
Secondly download Mpeg Streamclip and use that to open your FCP file. Then use it to export to the Media 100 720 codec, making sure that you have the frame size set to ‘unscaled’ (NOT to DV) and the quality set to max.
I don’t know if this will cure things, but this is the method I use for converting stuff to Media 100i and it generally works well.

Hi Joe,
[Joe Ciupik] “So moving files between these two is easy and does not take a special codec or conversion to import into FCP?”
Although it isn’t possible to swap project files, it is possible to share media if it is created in one of the FCP compatible codecs like DV etc.

Hi Felix,
ARRGH!!!
This has just bitten me in the proverbial. I’m doing an important DVD for clients and all the overlay files are coming out jaggy! Just like your text.
I’ve e-mailed Boris tech support, perhaps they have an answer.

Hi Joe,
Things have changed in the Media 100 arena – it’ll be some time until it is like the good old days of being one of the most used platforms, but it is holding its own and catching up with the competition.
The decision is to upgrade has been made considerably easier by the fact that Media 100 HD now runs on the same standard AJA hardware as FCP, Premier etc. You get the best of both worlds, the Media 100 interface you love, plus the ability to run FCP for compatibility. Believe me, I’m sitting here with my HDe only because it is also able to be an FCP suite.
With a dual boot system you have the advantage of being able to use all your old media and projects in a system that is light years ahead of Media 100i. The ability to (finally!) apply filters to clips, multi-layer editing, multi-codec support. It’s all there, and Media 100 is being updated faster than any time in my experience and I’ve been using the system for over 10 years. Plus it is just so much faster for rendering.
But you really have to look at where you are going as an editor to make the best selection. If you don’t have a wealth of old projects to maintain, or if there is a real business case to switch platforms then going down the FCP only route may be advantageous. Remember though that changing platforms can be a traumatic experience. The advantage with a dual boot system is that you have that crutch of a familiar system to go back to if things go wrong during the transition. Plus, of course, Media 100 has distinct advantages in some areas, even if it hasn’t got all the bells and whistles that FCP et all have (yet!).

Hi Felix,
I’m inclined to see this as a bug actually. Although mine came out (slightly) better, I did get some awful jaggies a few times and it seemed to just go that way all of a sudden.
It might be worth sending that pic to BorisFX support and seeing if they have any comments.

Hi Felix,
It seems to look slightly better (making it vector text seemed to help) but not that great

Hi Alex,
[Alex Wainwright] “I found it interesting too, so I bought it!”
Cool! Let us know how you get on. I noticed that the magma chassis was listed as faulty – was it a serious problem?

Hi Felix,
I’ve even encountered this problem with Boris title tools inside FCP – even when working in 10-bit uncompressed.
somewhere between RED’s 3 and 4 something went amiss I reckon.
Are you Intel or PPC?

Hi Felix,
I get this from time to time. What codec are you using? Have you tried with different colours? I’ve seen the DV based codecs do this with strong reds (among others)

Ahh!
I misunderstood. Yes, after altering text in the text tool you do now need to hit update for it to change in the comp window and on the monitor. I was thinking that you weren’t getting any video on the monitor at all.
There was a reason given for the removal of the auto-update text tool button, but if I recall correctly it didn’t really wash. You could try posting the request on the Boris FX forum, several of the Boris staff post there regularly and they could probably give a better explanation for its untimely demise.
