Hi GSW,

In general I have found that when subtitling into a language I don’t speak, such as Chinese, the key is to get whoever does the translation to present it on a sentence by sentence basis with the English. That way you can easily match up the translated subtitle and its duration to the English soundtrack.

As John mentioned, get the translation checked by a number of different people, if possible in the intended country of distribution as languages evolve over time. And you’d be surprised how often slang and colloquialisms turn up in translations done by non-professional translators.

I’ve just made the effect in FX to see if there was a difference, but (in 6.1) I got it to work OK.

In this case I did the following,

1. Made a new composition above my clip in G1 (or whatever)
2. Edit the composition (FX launches)
3. You should have one video layer set as V1. Create another by “add 3D plane” or command-K. Make sure this is also set to V1
4. Apply basic blur to the topmost layer.

You should now have a completely blurry layer.

5. Create a new layer. Place it at the top
6. Set it to Still Image File and import your shape (from photoshop or whatever)

If you’ve managed to import it with its alpha channel in place you should now have the shape sitting over the blurry video. If not, try using the “Make Alpha Key” filter from the filter menu. This may well have the effect of making your shape invisible but its mask visible. If that’s the case don’t worry – we can fix that later

7. Drag this new shape track to the MASK track of the blurry video. (drag it onto the word mask – you’ll need to have the drop-down of the track enabled)

Now you should have clean video and blurred video in the shape of your imported shape. If you have it reversed to the way you wanted it (see above) then click the “inverst mask track” button (the one that looks like a red dot in a box next to the “eye” symbol of the mask track). This will reverse the shape.

Let me know if that cures the problem,

I do this regularly in Boris RED, but you could use FX.

This is how I do it in RED,

1. Create a composition in the gfx layer above your clip
2. Edit the composition (i.e. launch RED)
3. create a new track as a spline primitive, I usually use the oval shape.
4. Using the scale controls make the shape the right size to cover the offending logo/face/sweat mark (I kid you not)
5. apply Basic Blur from the filters menu to give the shape a soft edge, adjust to taste.
6. create a new track as video 1, apply Basic Blur
7. move the spline primitive track into the MASK track of the blurred video track
8. You should now have blurred video in the shape of your spline primitive over the top of your clean video.
9. Adjust the blur of the video to taste.
10. Use the motion tracker to track the shape(rather than the blured video track) to the thing you are covering up.

Now, you can also use the painting tools in RED to paint the shape you want, or you can create the shape in say photoshop and import it as a still image with an alpha channel – useful if you have only FX rather than RED. Hell, you can even use a big full stop from the text generator, all you need is the shape.

Of course you can do all this in AE if you want and probably in broadly the same way.

At the risk of becoming another voice in this thread, I just thought I’d chip in with some observations. Apologies if this has been covered already (it’s a long thread!)

I’m currently running two media 100i suites and both are using the current quicktime versions without any issue. Although on the surface it seems that the QT update is to blame, I reckon there’s more to this.

Couple of things. When did you last repair permissions on your OS drive? Weird happenings can sometimes be attributed to permission issues.

Secondly, do you have the software codecs installed, and the media100-codec component removed? This is just wild guessing, but the codec component especially used to cause compatibility issues.

Hi Michael,

Is it that strange lone arrow that only appears at certain zoom factors? Yes, I get that. I guess it’s just a UI bug. Freaks you out though, especially when you are about to master something!

The arrows do seem to be a peculiarity of Media 100. Most other NLEs I’ve seen simply make the top clip dominant, so you can’t have a non visible head or tail of a clip on the timeline like you can in Media 100 (unless it is part of an effect of course, or you mod its opacity natch) So someone used to another system might not guess the arrows are moveable or infact dispensible.

Yes, you have to have at least one arrow between tracks, but as the OP mentions, media 100 defaults the arrow to the head of the incoming clip rather than the tail of the outgoing, so I guess if you aren’t used to it, it might seem strange.

Even stranger now I guess is the fact that we have this odd hybrid of “old school” media 100 with arrows, and top down clips with modable opacity on the upper clips but without clip based effects filtering.

But I digress,

Simply click on the arrows, hold the mouse button down and drag the arrows away. You can also drag the arrows to desired points, or click to create new ones.

Thanks for the info. I was going to start trawling the modding sites to see if anyone had any info, but I must confess I hadn’t thought about seeing if Apple themselves had a service manual that covers mobo swap outs (which is basically all the info I need G4-wise). I’ll look into that.

Thanks for googling – I did the same with the same results!

Last year I put a sawtooth G4 in a 2U ATX rackcase which required re-milling mounting pounts etc, so yes, I’m fairly confident to press on without the instructions. However the thing that the installation guides cover is the proper way to disassemble the G4. I came unstuck when I couldn’t find the last screw-point in the sawtooth. It turns out it was underneath the processor. How did I find out? I downloaded the Marathon installation guide for the earlier rack series that fitted the sawtooth 😉 Unfortunately that guide is no longer on my system for some reason. Also the Marathon cases reuse things like screws and some metal work from the G4 case, so it may require some guess work without the guide.

The other thing was that I got the sawtooth for free, so if I killed it it wasn’t too much of a problem. This Quicksilver still has a job to do, so I was trying to make sure I tackled this properly. But I doubt that reservation will last 😉

As for calling the guy – I get the hint that there are some legal issues regarding Marathon Computers (afterall they have gone but my case has a “lifetime” warranty). Their website has been blocked from internet archives like thewaybackmachine which seems odd to me.

Oh well, the quest continues
