Sorry this is so disgracefully late. If you’re still interested, the theme I chose was Pai, and with the help of a friend (with more knowledge of graphic design and code), I turned it into this: https://jakfoto.com

Just wanted to share the final product, in case you were interested! It’s certainly not perfect, but I’m pretty happy with it as a trial run of roto brush, not to mention a wildly ambitious shoot.

It figures that I’d be messing around where I shouldn’t be! 🙂
Thank you, Great Szalam! It looks like freezing the roto brush was the key. I’m amazed that’s the only major issue I ran into.
Thanks for the links as well. Time to sit my impatient self down and get educated!

Thanks to everyone for your input. I found a WordPress theme (from Themeforest) that I think will work great – very customizable, lots of widgets, support for Vimeo embeds, etc. I’m excited to get it up and running!
It does make me a bit sad that nobody has created a website service for filmmakers that offers the same sort of features that many photographer services have. Maybe it’s just because for so long, film and video have been expensive and thus dominated by larger companies rather than individual artists?

Please read the part where I say that I’d love to hire a designer, but need a faster, cheaper solution “for now.” I’m not just looking for how to get a video online – I’m well aware of that (and better ways than YouTube) – I’m looking for a template/website building service. Thank you.

Thanks – that’s an interesting service! It looks pretty sharp, but I was thinking of more of a full website template. Something like ShowIt, which is actually a great service (aimed at photogs but does beautiful video) but operates on Flash. Maybe that’s the best I can get.

Sorry, unfortunately I don’t have good info on that… I bought a bunch of equipment (tripods, light kit, green screen) from someone who really didn’t know what they were dealing with, and the base plate and rails were just kinda thrown in there. Josh said he saw similar equipment at most camera stores – I’m guessing he looked at places like Samy’s and Calumet.

If you have access to a drill press, you can adapt a rod base into a shoulder mount rail system pretty easily. My husband made one for me for about $80, and I love it. Here it is:

My husband Josh explains how he made my custom shoulder mount (and saved me lots of money!).Sorry for the crummy quality of the vid/audio - this was shot on my little point-and-shoot. I am accepting donations to improve the quality of future posts! :)
