Also note that if you change your work area (your in and out) the render queue will take what is current when you hit render by default. To lock the in and out points for a particular render, you must go into the render settings and hit “set”.

February 14, 2012 at 9:42 pm in reply to: A light to only cast shadows ?

I did a quick sample for you in the project below. The trick is to duplicate your source and change the bottom copy only have shadows. Have a light set to make its shadow where you want it.

Then on the top copy, shine another light that doesn’t cast shadows. Then parent the bottom copy to the top (I think I forgot to do that).

    Hope this helps.

In addition to time effects, a nice and simple adjustment layer with a g-blur, curve adjustment, and vignette mask is a good place to start.

Also, if possible, do some test shoots. That way you never say:

“Oh, if only we shot it like this!”

    You need more memory.

Also, is this a purchased AE program or pirated like you asked in your last post?

February 13, 2012 at 2:42 pm in reply to: slow motion with matched sound

I’m not familiar with the twixtor plug, but if it doesn’t affect the audio, then use time remapping instead.

Duplicate the layer, turn of the video eyeball and delete the twix plug. If its a constant change in speed, then just go up to layer/time/time stretch. Change the time to match what you did with twixtor to the video. If its not constant change, then enable time remapping and try to match what you did in twixtor.

Side note: Having never used Twixtor, I am not sure whether it changes the audio. Maybe give AE’s timeremapping a chance with both video and audio. I have found great results with pixel motion turned on. That way you know that you are in sync (not the boy band).

    Good luck,
    Reiner

February 13, 2012 at 2:10 pm in reply to: Ram preview, sound card routing and Motu Problem

So, if you made a comp that didn’t have audio embedded with video, but did have a solo audio layer, it would start rendering RAM preview normally?

Weird. I’m a Mac user, so I’m unfamiliar with your Windows setup. Maybe there is a windows user out there who could help better than I.

My only other suggestion is to have your AE info window open when you hit render and see if it tells you anything.

    Good luck,

February 9, 2012 at 6:29 pm in reply to: Ram preview, sound card routing and Motu Problem

It might be because you have multiprocessing turned on which speeds up total render time but will have a lag at the beginning of the RAM preview process while it distributes tasks to all of the cores. Turn off multiprocessing in the preferences to test this.

Another problem might be the audio. What codec is the audio in? What is the sample rate and does it match the sample rate in the project settings (default at 48 kHZ).

  • Learn something everyday. Thanks Andrew.

So do you typically use this method when keying out such elements as smoke or water? We rarely use black background, but occasionally for such elements. Good to know a new technique when those time come up.

  • I agree with Dave. The best route would be chroma keying. I was assuming that the footage had already been shot, but on second reading it doesn’t appear that it has. Is chromakey out of the equation?
