Cheers Alex. I was a bit skeptical as not many have used the J4 and the fact that they’re expensive. I think I’ll go with the Graid 8TB. Unless I go for SSDs on the J4, which makes it as expensive as the R4 for less than half the capacity:(

Cheers Eric. I think I’ll go with the GRaid for now. For more capacity with 3.5″ drives and they’ve been around for a while, so kind of battle tested too:)

July 24, 2013 at 5:00 am in reply to: Pegasus Promise New Drives J2 & J4

    Hi Tom.
Am in the same situation as you are. I use the R4 in RAID 5 on the road in TV OBs. But it’s not exactly portable. I hand carry it on flights, a bit cumbersome. I was looking at the GRaid Thunderbolt for a portable solution. But, it’s only RAID 0 (I don’t want to RAID1 ever) and no onboard hardware RAID controller. Never thought about the J4 (RAID0,1 or 10). Will look into it now:)
    Cheers

May 10, 2013 at 4:32 am in reply to: Blackmagic Ultrastudio 3d and heat

Hi Will. I bought the UltraStudio Express a couple of weeks back since the UltraStudio 3D is not listed on the website anymore. I’ve been using the Express for a sporting event to record HD Pro Res 422 files onto a Pegasus R4 every day. I record 8 continuous hrs of footage everyday and haven’t had any problems with the unit getting hot. Don’t know how much more heat the 3D would produce, hope this helps.

or just go with the Blackmagic UltraStudio Express which connects to the iMac via ThunderBolt. It has all the SDI and Analog connection options. Costs much less than the AJA IO XT too. Just bought my first BM product after years of using AJA and Matrox. Am really happy I went with BM.

  • I agree with Bill. The 12-35 and 35 -100 are probably the only 2 lenses you’d need for the GH3. Great camera and really good lenses.

April 2, 2013 at 2:14 pm in reply to: To MBP Retina today or wait. Reliablity issues?

I use the 15″ MBP with retina display for on-site editing for golf highlights. I have to ingest around 5hrs of ProRes HD footage for 5 days and edit a 1 hr highlights show each day. I use it with Matrox MX02 and Promise R4 8TB RAID 5 and it is just super fast. I don’t even use a 2nd bin monitor, just the MBP’s screen. Yeah it is kinda small, but works for me. No reliability issues so far. I use FCP 7. Going to switch to FCP X soon. I also use PrPro a bit.

Ok, so it’s pretty much the same as in FCP 7, i.e., blading from trk 2 and copying onto trk 1.Thanks a ton for the help guys.
I have a strange feeling that I’m going to fall in love with the new maxed out iMac and X:)
