Which it’s not. (at least for me) I’m just wondering if I’m missing something in the core count decision. At least as it pertains to FCPX. I’m not an AE user, where I believe the number of cores plays a much bigger role.
In my limited understanding of all this, the best configuration (for me) is probably:
6 Cores (always fast)
32 GB RAM (although it appears upgrading from 32 requires replacing all the DIMMS)
512 GB Flash (which I think cannot be upgraded later)
D700Take the money savings from skipping the rest of the upgrades and perhaps put it in new (replace eSATA) Thunderbolt storage.

That’s interesting. I was under the impression that ProRes was easier (on the CPU/GPU) to edit with than compressed file formats.

While it’s quite possible I read this at one point in time and have forgotten it. (along with other things I can’t recall that I’ve forgotten) Sorry to clog up the forum with answers found in the documentaiton.
Although it’s odd that Apple would not allow the media to be transcoded. It is compressed and does take more (CPU) effort, as opposed to ProRes.

So, you’re saying you can’t transcode XDCAM EX to ProRes either?
But, I should be able to?
If this is a SW issue, I’m assuming it will take a while for Sony to release a new plug-in?

I believe the non-fusion drive in the 21.5″ iMac is 5200 rpm. While the fusion drive in the 27″ iMac is 7200 rpm.

Sorry if it appeared I was implying using the Fusion drive for media. I was suggesting using the SSD portion of the fusion drive for your projects, along with FCPX and the OS. Files small enough to take advantage of the SSD speed.

Here’s a link you might find useful.
It deals with partitioning a fusion drive. Personally, I like having the ability to put the OS/Apps on one drive and most of my data (especially non-speed sensitive data) on another drive/partition.
Partitioning the fusion drive will make it possible to have some control over what files will be kept on the SSD portion of the drive. You can keep FCPX Projects that you are actively working on on the SSD partition, leaving non-active projects elsewhere.
It appears that Apple approves of partitioning the fusion drive, since he is using Apple’s Disk Utility to do it.

I’m not sure how you could, since Apple didn’t point it out to you when you upgraded using their App Store app.
I’ve never seen this suggestion to backup your existing version of the (or any other) app.
The way I read this, you should backup up your Projects (and Events) and backup the current version of FCPX. I guess because if you have an issue with the new version working with your projects … you’re supposed to re-install the old version?
Unless I missed something in the article, I’m not sure what to do if you want to actually need to use your older version of FCPX. Drag the new version to the trash and drag the old version to the Applications folder?

You are jogging my memory on this issue.
So the S&Q mode is over cranking the data rate (87.5 mpbs) to record, but then playing back at the normal HQ data of 35 mbps. More data, better results.
I also just went back and looked at the brochure for the EX1R (since I didn’t’ see it in the manual). It states, “… images are recorded natively and at full resolution. The captured quality of slow-and fast-motion images is significantly higher than those created in the editing process.”
I’m not sure how to convert your data rate explanation with Sony’s. Natively? Full resolution? I thought the EXMOR sensor in this camera was full resolution? Or does the data get from the sensor get sampled/compressed? In the same Sony brochure, they refer to the sensor’s as “effective pixel count of 1920 x 1080”.
This sounds like there is more to this mode than just a higher recording data rate? Or am I reading too much into this?
