January 31, 2012 at 12:57 am in reply to: San Fransico FCPUG drops final cut from nameThe SF Cutters, a group that I co-founded, actually did have “Final Cut” in name at one point. In a vote by the group, we decided to call it “The San Francisco Final Cutters”.
That didn’t last long, though. People naturally shortened it to SF Cutters, because it was faster to say, and it stuck. I’m probably the one that did it first!
This was before many of you got into Final Cut Pro, though. Probably around 2002.
I’m glad the Final Cut in our name was dropped, however. We are one of the first to show other platforms. We showcased After Effects many times in our early incarnation. In fact, the SF Cutters continues to meet at the Adobe Offices here in San Francisco to this day.

Yes, but Thelma’s the only major editor using Lightworks that I know of.
One question: does the original Lightworks software resemble the new Open Source one? Curious.
BTW, Adobe video products played a role in Hugo, as well. For Pre-viz, mostly.Kevin Monahan

Yes, let me be clearer:
At one point people were still buying and learning Lightworks (the old NLE) even though it was already dead, as editors still used it in Hollywood. I don’t know of any editors using Lightworks, dead format, runs on ancient machines.
People are still buying and learning FCP7 even though it is already dead, as editors are still using it in Hollywood.
FCP7 is in the same situation as old Lightworks.
Maybe that makes more sense?

As a former FCP expert, one who wrote a book on FCP, trained thousands on FCP, actually was on the Final Cut Studio team for FCS1 and FCS3 – and who now works at Adobe: I agree with you!

While we await the next version of Premiere Pro (which may or may not fix your issues), indeed, the Trim monitor is the place for trimming as we did in the timeline. You can max it out by following my advice in this blog post: https://blogs.adobe.com/kevinmonahan/2011/07/01/keyboard-shortcuts-trimming-with-premiere-pro-cs4-cs5-cs5-5/

Hi Andy,
[andy lewis] “Selecting a clip in FCP7:
“X” to place in and out points at start and end of clip
“option-A” to select clip
and
“V” to select nearest edit point”•Yes, you can do a Mark Clip. Choose Marker>Mark Clip
•There is no “Select in to Out” but you can Lift or Extract in to out, which is usually what you want to do anyway.
•You don’t select edit points as you do in FCP. You can use Extend Edit commands to Roll to your playhead either before or after the edit, though. If you wish to ripple with keyboard shortcuts, launch the Trim Monitor and use keyboard shortcuts there. If you don’t like this, you can always make a feature request: https://www.adobe.com/go/wishThis blog post may help you: https://blogs.adobe.com/kevinmonahan/2011/07/01/keyboard-shortcuts-trimming-with-premiere-pro-cs4-cs5-cs5-5/

[Lance Bachelder] “Love that folks are finding shortcomings in PPro.”
I’m sorry your experience in the beta program wasn’t satisfactory, but let me assure you, we are listening to pro editors and their feature requests.

[Phil Hoppes] ” If you are using CS5.0 (like me) the installed version of the shortcuts is bad. Go here and you can download the proper file for this. “
The fix was for Windows computers (and how many FCP users are there on Windows? Not many). On Mac, keyboard shortcuts are fine.

I’m sure a lot of editors were using the original Lightworks to cut feature films when Avid started to make inroads. How many Lightworks editors are there now? (not talking about the new open source version).

Do you have any empty audio or video tracks on the main sequence or the nested sequence? If so, remove them and try again.
