  • You are certainly right about the 1080 60i footage.
Not familiar with the Terranex converter.
Facilities here in small town Alabama probably never heard of it either.
    Thanks.

I have only been shooting in 1080 formats.
The tricky part is setting up FCP.
I’ve been editing in an EX-1 timeline using the Apple Pro Res Codec for rendering. Then copying everything and dropping onto a DV timeline for DVCAM recording.

You will need FCP Studio 2 and all the upgrades. Quicktime etc.

The way I see it is you will either have letter boxed images-bands at top and bottom, or center punched- no bands at top or bottom, but the side are cropped.
Center punching fills up an SD screen completely.
If you shoot with center punching in mind it should not present a problem.
You also have the option of panning around within the picture.

Try shooting 1080 60i. Seems to be the smoothest for me. My final product is SD interlace anyway. Cable TV and local TV commercials.

How are you converting it to HDV?

I use FCP Studio 2 and am looking for the best software solution.
Right now the best results are:

Download shots into FCP with XDCAM Transfer.
Easy Setup set to what I’m shooting.
    Edit.
Copy and paste into DV timeline.
    Render.
Firewire out to DVCAM DSR-20 deck

This has given mediocre results so far. I’m still looking for something better.

I am monitoring my footage through the firewire to the DVCAM deck through S-video cable to NTSC Tube TV. Not pretty but work very nicely for DV editing.

Going from the EX timeline to the DV timeline is where I am a little fuzzy. Too many options!
Anyone else going out to DVCAM and getting beautiful result please speak-up.
    Thanks.

    Don,
Glad to hear you are pleased with your results.
Could you give us a run down on the workflow you use to convert EX-1 HD to SD?
Which formats are you shooting with and which flavor of SD video are you mastering?
And what is your final product being used for?

    Thanks for the help!
